@uliwitness Yeah, that’s the parable; the problem with using “Good Samaritan” as a _name_ is that it reinforces the wrong part, e.g. “there was a good one” rather than “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Also, you know, completely erasing that the Samaritans are an actual people that still exist.

And “Good Samaritan” is named for a fucking *slur*. The Samaritan people still exist, and still deal with prejudice and oppression.

@WiteWulf And then there in the mid-1990s there was a brief “WinModem” phase where the modem was an ISA or PCI card that mostly just did A/D and D/A, and the modem CODEC was handled in software on the PC.

@WiteWulf There was a point in the 1980s when modems were also available as Apple II, PC (ISA), and even NuBus cards. For something like an Apple II or very old PC without built-in serial ports, it made some sense to combine the serial port and the modem into a single unit.

I was actually able to test it without writing a plug-in by adding support for fstab to getent(1)! Since getent(1) uses the API, not raw file parsing, I could be sure everything is going through my new code.

Did what I think is needed to have NetBSD’s `getfsent(3)` indirect through `nsswitch.conf` today, now I just have to write an `nss` plug-in with which to test it.
