It’s always hilarious when a libertarian appears with Econ 101 arguments about how ACKSHUALLY THERE SHOULDN’T BE A MINIMUM WAGE, HURRR! when the grown-ups are trying to discuss issues that affect real peoples’ lives instead of right-wing economists’ perfectly-spherical models of how things […]

The Scott Alexander Email: An Explainer - Gyges Blog

This is very good. It's distressing how many smart people take Scott Alexander seriously and don't recognize how noxious he actually is. segyges.leaflet.pub/3m4yn4yf2lk2d/

"The Economist" has an article titled, I shit you not, “Universal Child Care Can Hurt Children.”

What an incredible fucking ghoulish thing to write.

In 2008, a blogger named Curtis Yarvin called for a future president to kill foreign aid programs as part of a plan to replace democracy with dictatorship.

Now 600,000 people are dead—and 14 million will die by 2030, according to the Lancet. This is the running death toll of tech fascism.

@uliwitness I figured out a good analogy: Imagine if someone were to name a chain of comedy clubs “The Funny German” but otherwise had nothing to do with Germany or the German people. Is it going against the “Germans are serious all the time” stereotype, or is it playing into that?

@uliwitness Yeah, that’s the parable; the problem with using “Good Samaritan” as a _name_ is that it reinforces the wrong part, e.g. “there was a good one” rather than “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Also, you know, completely erasing that the Samaritans are an actual people that still exist.

And “Good Samaritan” is named for a fucking *slur*. The Samaritan people still exist, and still deal with prejudice and oppression.

PS - Ever hear of a “Kaiser Family Foundation” poll or study? Or see the Sutter Health logo on a soccer jersey or rinkside ad? That’s your money they’re using to promote themselves.

it's amazing how many people show up to tell you you're a naïve goody-two-shoes when you express such a revolutionary idea that perhaps fascists should not be debated, if only because public debates are primarily used to disseminate propaganda, not to prove anything.

And I’m sure the people who keep producing new editions of GS/OS could produce a “ROM05” that can boot from a 1.44MB floppy via the SWIM, or from SCSI via the 5380, or from an SD card, or whatever—all while incorporating the latest enhanced Toolbox components, and being implemented via flash […]

After all, there are lots of battery-rotted Apple IIgs systems from which ASICs like the VGC, Mega II, and Ensoniq sound chip could be salvaged, and other equivalently rotted systems from which SWIM and 5380 SCSI controllers could be salvaged, and one could just include 8MB of RAM (or more) on […]

I’m surprised the Apple IIgs community hasn’t created a “Samuel Clemens” logic board design to allow people to make an “Apple IIgs+” like the “Mark Twain” prototypes using existing IIgs (and other) parts.

Conservative justices seem poised to weaken Voting Rights Act Several of the court’s conservatives appeared hostile to the traditional understanding of the civil rights law.

Among the crowning achievements of decades of Black civil rights were integrating public schools, ending Jim Crow, & tearing down walls to Black voting rights incl. Southern states finding ways to dilute Black votes. Now mostly-white jurists are going to dismantle what remains of the latter.

The Supreme Court’s majority right wing indicated in oral arguments that they think racism is over on the same day that the vice president defended the “I love Hitler” guy, and that the NYT reported that the current administration plans to accept only white, English-speaking refugees.

@WiteWulf And then there in the mid-1990s there was a brief “WinModem” phase where the modem was an ISA or PCI card that mostly just did A/D and D/A, and the modem CODEC was handled in software on the PC.

@WiteWulf There was a point in the 1980s when modems were also available as Apple II, PC (ISA), and even NuBus cards. For something like an Apple II or very old PC without built-in serial ports, it made some sense to combine the serial port and the modem into a single unit.

I was actually able to test it without writing a plug-in by adding support for fstab to getent(1)! Since getent(1) uses the API, not raw file parsing, I could be sure everything is going through my new code.

Did what I think is needed to have NetBSD’s `getfsent(3)` indirect through `nsswitch.conf` today, now I just have to write an `nss` plug-in with which to test it.
