Suzaku thinks he is a big hero and dresses up like one, but the point is he's definitely not. Yes, Lelouch has a lot of hubris and makes a bunch of mistakes, silly and not, rather than being perfectly calculating. I liked that sort of contrast.

Oh dang, I didn't notice the news until now, but Depersonalization - a big Chinese indie hybrid RPG based on tabletop Call of Cthulhu - got its english translation overhaul a couple weeks back.

I'd been holding off on playing it because I'd heard the initial translation was pretty wonky.

I don't know if it helps to follow the game, but I did that as well.

I hope you do get to see the cool endings sooner rather than later, since a few of the conclusions are definitely busywork but a surprising number are pretty neat!

I've only got the first of those, but I want to read more.

I've been shouting about this game since the day it came out. Genuinely one of the best side-scrolling brawlers EVER. Incredible depth means that even on the ultra-highest difficulty (where every enemy moves like a hummingbird and stings like a truck) it's possible to 1cc it consistently.

If I were to make one of these, it would be relatively close!

It may not always be a looker, but the first 22 eps of this show are damn good

Alright, it's looking like the ultimate answer to "does Hundred Line really have 100 distinct endings?" is "mostly true", because the game's script is indeed a giant monster of very different routes and scenarios.

The review consensus is positive too, with a few rather minor caveats.

I had already pre-ordered, but you've convinced me to double down on my decision! Nice review.

Got an update for you about Tokimeki Memorial's Sega Saturn. The patch's team has been slowly working on the English translation and is making essentially a help wanted ad. The current patch crashes a lot and we could use people with hacking and debugging experience. Let us know!

These are all extremely different games, naturally, but I like to think there is a common thread of unusual ambition and letting the player embrace continuing even with sub-optimal decisions, rather than expecting you to save and reload.

Baldur's Gate 3 was my most hyped game for 2023, Romancing Saga 2 remake was the one for 2024 and now...it's looking like it'll be Hundred Line for 2025.

If I may comment, the parallels are present...but they are clearly not using this as the real ending. Which I much prefer to how things were resolved in that episode.

I want to watch the new Gundam soon, but life seems to be conspiring against it. *shakes fist at the heavens*

Some folks are very radical in their love and hatred for media. G-Witch had its issues, but also quite a few virtues. Then again, that's a very Gundam-like state of affairs. I was personally satisfied and the show still has plenty of fans. It's far from universally or even predominantly disliked.

Saw the whole thing now, it's a fantastic dive into the history of wargames/strategy games and how cultural changes affect how we "play" war as a society. Great work George!

Hobonichi is publishing a series of articles based on a chat between Shigesato Itoi and Marcus Lindblom, talking about the localization of Earthbound. It's a pretty cool glimpse behind the scenes! The rest of the series will be published throughout the week.

Exactly how much input a TV producer had in CG will always be debatable, but it's valuable to highlight that even from an early stage the local audience wasn't only interpreting the series as "poor little Japan" and someone publicly noted how this also reflected Japan's colonization of Korea, etc.

For the record, the screenshots are from a Japanese web site listing media people labelled as "anti-Japanese", so I guess right-wingers hold a grudge. The controversy was also mentioned in other places...incidentally, this was also during a time when the global anti-Iraq war protests were recent.

Ultimately, it's telling that you don't really see right-wing Japanese embracing Code Geass per se, despite how huge the show was at its peak of popularity.
In fact, there was a minor controversy back in 2006, when the MBS TV producer made a comparison between CG Japan and how Korea was treated.

On the other hand, the series depicts the plight of civilians as victims of occupation with sympathy, yes, but it also takes a more critical stance towards the previous authorities (ie: the hotel hijacking by JLF in S1 wasn't glorified at all). It never portrays old Japan's regime as a golden age.
