How ICE, THP targeted Nashville immigrants, inflated safety claims - Nashville Banner Analysis shows Tennessee state troopers and ICE agents profiled and disparaged immigrants during Nashville enforcement operation in May 2025.

Today we're sharing an investigation into the Nashville ICE/THP traffic operation. (Thread)

I viewed over 50 hours of footage from the raid, which showed law enforcement calling targets "wet," "bodies," "illegals," physically writing on arrestees and competing to make the most arrests:

THP citations plunged during the weeklong operation. During that week in May, troopers wrote just 48 citations in Davidson County, down nearly 80 percent from the 229 issued in the same period in 2024. Speeding tickets dropped 49 percent. (6/11)

Records also show that ICE inflated both the number of total arrests and criminal arrests related to the operation. Some of the most serious criminals touted by ICE were picked up from probation or parole appointments that week, not during the traffic operation. (5/11)

Agents wrote on detainees, in one case referring to the "mark of the beast," to track arrests by team. After a restaurant employee was detained, an agent joked, "The guacamole’s never going to taste the same now," and continued even after the trooper said his body cam was “hot.” (4/11)

Our analysis of arrest records and Tennessee Highway Patrol body and dash cam footage from the May operation contradicts claims that the stops were focused on traffic safety and free from bias. Agents used pejoratives and openly discussed targeting certain neighborhoods. (2/11)
