But really, it just goes back to good tutorials taking time and effort.

And even then, some stuff does require just telling the player directly what is going on. My favorite games of Trails have a few pop ups that I have to read.

This usually results in a pop up window that interrupts everything like I'm browsing the internet in the early 2000s with no adblocker.
