Daniel Naroditsky (November 9, 1995 – October 19, 2025), often referred to as Danya, was an American chess grandmaster, author, and commentator. He won the Under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in 2007 and the US Junior Championship in 2013, the same year he was officially awarded the grandmaster title at age 18. While Naroditsky was consistently in the top 200 of FIDE's world rankings for classical chess, he was an absolute beast in faster time formats such as blitz chess, where he was consistently ranked top 25 in the world. Naroditsky also made engaging educational and often hilarious chess content on YouTube and Twitch, published two chess books, and wrote columns for Chess Life and The New York Times. He played on Chess.com under the handle DanielNaroditsky, and on Lichess.org under the handle RebeccaHarris. As to why he chose the latter, "I have to point out that I spent all of five seconds creating that account name because I didn't know that it would become big and Rebecca Harris is just a character in a TV show called Limitless that's a spin-off off of a movie that I liked and Rebecca Harris may or may not have been played by an actress [Jennifer Carpenter] who, in my early high school days, well… I'll trail off there… let's just say she made an impression on me". And his generosity, humility and kindness were unmatched in the chess world. He will be dearly missed.

My grief is less due to his skill than to how decent, funny and insightful a human being he was. For all the darkness in the world, he was a flicker of light. He will remain so, in my heart and mind, as long as I live.
