The 2024 election is upon us. Millions of ballots have already been cast. Mail-in ballots are being returned. Early voting is taking place. And dozens of rumors are spreading. So, let me re-introduce our framework for diagnosing how many “evidence-based” rumors mislead:

true! and if we could all just abandon the idea that there is a "state-of-nature" that we need to return to, the discourse would be much more useful.

Sorry to call this out here specifically, but hunter-gatherers existed on every continent & biome & the idea that we can even refer to them like a group, as if we could even take an average of their daily labor or their attitudes towards labor, is absurd. The category is way too diverse & expansive.

We need to slow down with the assumption that "hunter-gatherer" refers to a single kind society w/ a single kind of governance. There have been thousands of societies with varied and changing cultures without even necessarily a clear line drawn between gathering and cultivating.
