Today's artist without a (known) birthday: Pieter de Grebber of Haarlem. Here he is in around 1630, dressed up as an ancient painter and looking pretty silly. Sorry Piet!

Does look like a mark made by dragging a finger through the wet clay. Sometimes a tile's maker would mark it by dragging their fingers through the clay in a semi-circle as seen on the bottom of this tile which also has kitten paw imprints

My photo shows a square Roman floor tile made of red clay. Inscribed into the clay is a drawing of what appears to be a Roman lighthouse (faros). The lighthouse has four storeys, which are stepped inwards at each level. Tile width 20 cm. Two Roman lighthouses flanked the harbour at Dover, the main base of the Roman fleet ‘Classis Britannica’. On display at the British Museum.

I love this solid-looking villa in the Mount Florida area of Glasgow. Designed by Richard Henderson and built in 1906, it has a distinctive Art Nouveau feel to it, mostly in the proportions and the windows/doorway.
