LB 966 is now being heard before the NE Education committee. LB 966, the Hunger-Free Schools Act, would ensure children who qualify for reduced meals have access to nutritious breakfast and lunch at no cost.

The cloture motion on LB3, this year's "winner-take-all" bill, failed to clear the 33-vote threshold. The vote was 31-18.

#NLeg has a responsibility to the taxpayers to implement Express Lane Eligibility (ELE). If passed LB 283, the #NELeg will be voting to remove barriers for Nebraska’s children to access the quality healthcare and services they need.

ELE has been proven to be a successful approach for significantly enrolling & providing care to children in other states:

For example: Louisiana has experienced tremendous results. Prior to ELE, it was about $116 to process applications. Now, the cost is $12-15 per application.

LB 283 aims to streamline the process by automatically enrolling eligible children receiving SNAP benefits in Medicaid/CHIP - expanding health care & saving NE time & money.

As a nation, we require every child to receive an education. Research, such as from the USDA’s Economic Research Service, has shown that universal meal programs significantly reduce food insufficiency & create positive associations with diet quality, food security, & academic performance.

Next: #LB14 adopts the Hunger-Free Schools Act, which is revolutionary for our education system. This bill aims to provide all students - public and private - with free school breakfast/lunches & reimburse school districts for the costs associated with this program.

Let’s work to find solutions to problems within our current framework so every child in the state has a chance to succeed through our wonderful public education system. #NELeg #LB427
