Ed Van Impe was a defensemen for my Flyers. In 1966-67, he was a rookie for the Chicago Black Hawks. That was the last year of the Original Six. He came in 2nd for Rookie of the Year voting. Booby Orr won it. But Ed said that in 1966-67, there were only 7 rookies that made the NHL that year.

In 1978, San Diego had a minor league team, and they were short of players. Willie suited up for a few games. He was 44 at the time, but he could still play. Looked like he never lost a step.

When I met Willie in San Diego in 1978, I asked him about how his family wound up in New Brunswick, Canada. He told me his grandparents were escaped slaves who made it all the way up there via the Underground Railroad. A true honor to meert him.
