Antebellum Data Journalism: Or, How Big Data Busted Abe Lincoln An 1848 investigative news story that relied on heavy data analysis snared big fish, including two future presidents.

Super interesting and look forward to reading a lot more! But just a tiny nit: 1952 might have been possibly the first use of a computer, but nowhere near the first use of data in journalism.

Totally right on the last bit… but there is a point to be made here. User behavior is changing, and AI does threaten traditional blue-link search. It’s actually a rare example of good tech journalism, IMO!

Yep, I’m aware of the differences. Still maintain if newspapers had a large and growing core readership, the situation would be (was) very different.

Same in the US. But. Part of the reason distribution is so challenging is the rapidly declining numbers of hard core readers. So symptom or disease?

Yeah! I have only vague memories of bringing it four hours a day, two days per week. Not including summers. Or spring break. Or winter break.

I guess we have reached some sort of critical mass here. Let’s hope it sticks. And let’s hope this place doesn’t start to suck like the last one.
