Alarming for academic freedom not just at UT but across the US

When we write we do not have a fully formed idea that we then flesh out with words. The act of choosing and shaping sentences and paragraphs helps us discover the emerging idea like a sculptor finding the shape available in the stone.

I was able to buy a new laptop in a computer store and walk out with it not long ago. The store is called Microcenter, they have locations around the U.S. I had a mostly good experience, mainly because I could talk to actual humans before making a decision. It was refreshing.

From my alma mater: "UT will separately consolidate Germanic Studies, Slavic and Eurasian Studies, and French and Italian into a new Department of European and Eurasian Studies."

An extraordinary opportunity, and so heartening to see this support from UCL-SSEES for fragile yet extremely valuable fields of scholarship!

Bureaucracy has always been critiqued as "automatic," but at the end of the day, the people handling the files were *people*, each one of whom could leak information, toss a file in a bin, or object to the mission. These acts often weren't that disruptive--but it was room for dissent nonetheless.
