Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Jonas to TV2, asked how much the riders are told about the safety situation during the race?: "We didn't hear so much about it, but in relation to the discussion about the protests we've seen, you know people do it for a reason, it's horrible what's happening currently and I think those protesting⬇️

Melvyn Bragg decides to step down from presenting In Our Time After 26 years on the programme, the legendary presenter bids farewell to the series

A huge moment -- Melvyn Bragg steps down from In Our Time after over a quarter of a century. What a programme and what a legacy! Just a model for how to make great, clever, engaging radio, and a twenty-seven-year experiment that proves there's a huge global audience for smart, scholarly programming.

For comparison, Microsoft Office 365 has 345m paid subscribers worldwide. The idea that ChatGPT will conjure up five times that amount in just a few years isn't just hypothetical, it's fantasy. These people are delusional.

I want to do a 🧡 about the Sidney Sweeney thing, because it's *extremely* revealing & educational.

First, to be clear: I could not give less of a shit about the details -- the ad, the rhetoric, the jeans, her boobs, whatever. Good lord, who cares.

Let's look at the *structure* of the episode.

Exactly. I really don't get why structural changes would need to be made. Pogačar is a once-in-a-generation talent. Take him out of the equation, and Vingegaard would be miles ahead of the rest of the peloton. You do everything you can and you get beaten by someone who is better, fair enough.

This is true, but:

1) there has to be an existing market to take over (Uber)
2) there has to be suppressed demand for the service offered, which you can lock in to create an economy of scale and then profit (Amazon)

AI firms are trying to find one of those two things, so far with limited success.

The Democratic Party’s capitulation to the Crypto lobby is one of the most nakedly corrupt things I’ve seen in my life.

Crypto is a blatant scam with zero value that is designed to end popular control of our currency. Dems just co-signed the next global financial crisis. It’s unforgivable.

Joel Embiid sees you In what he's calling his "most important" offseason, Joel Embiid responds to his critics.

This profile of Embiid is a triumph.

He's my favorite Sixer ever -- and maybe my favorite athlete.

This piece shows why.

Athletes like to pretend they're superhuman. Embiid's the opposite. He's achingly human -- a mix of self-doubt, introspection, and defiance.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Tesla's Supervised Robotaxi launch was a pathetic flop.

Tesla's Supervised Robotaxi launched yesterday to much acclaim from the Tesla Cult. Since nobody who was at the event has properly summarized the first day, we thought we would do it.

Below are our findings. 🧡

Scatterplot titled β€œEmpirical Evidence of Ideological Targeting in Federal Layoffs: Agencies seen as liberal are significantly more likely to face DOGE layoffs.”
β€’	The x-axis represents Perceived Ideological Leaning of federal agencies, ranging from -2 (Most Liberal) to +2 (Most Conservative), based on survey responses from over 1,500 federal executives.
β€’	The y-axis shows Agency Size (Number of Staff) on a logarithmic scale from 1,000 to 1,000,000.

Each point represents a federal agency:
β€’	Red dots indicate agencies that experienced DOGE layoffs.
β€’	Gray dots indicate agencies with no layoffs.

Key Observations:
β€’	Liberal-leaning agencies (left side of the plot) are disproportionately represented among red dots, indicating higher layoff rates.
	β€’	Notable targeted agencies include:
β€’	HHS (Health & Human Services)
	β€’	EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
β€’	NIH (National Institutes of Health)
β€’	CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
	β€’	Dept. of Education
β€’	USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development)
β€’	The National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE), despite its conservative leaning (+1 on the scale), is an exception among targeted agencies.
β€’	A notable outlier: the Department of Veterans Affairs (moderately conservative) also faced layoffs despite its size.

Takeaway:

The figure visually demonstrates that DOGE layoffs disproportionately targeted liberal-leaning agencies, supporting claims of ideological bias. The pattern reveals that layoffs were not driven by agency size or budget alone but were strongly associated with perceived ideology.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with β€œefficiency” or β€œcutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. πŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ
