If America won't honour your country's trade agreement and imposes tariffs, why honour the digital anti-circumvention rules (digital locks) in those same agreements? Those rules which overwhelmingly benefit American tech companies.

Interesting argument from Cory Doctorow.

New piece! For the second time in three years, Metro Vancouver has raised development charges just after another level of government lowered taxes on new housing, capturing the savings instead of lowering total costs.

Mitigation efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and meet the Paris Agreement have been offset by economic growth - Communications Earth & Environment Global carbon dioxide intensity declined from 2015 to 2024 following the Paris Agreement, but total emissions still increased due to economic growth, according to a global analysis of population, gros...

Good news: carbon intensity has declined

Bad news: carbon emissions increased, due to the rapid rise in world GDP

Also bad news: the chance of staying below 2Β°C remained low, at 17%

Better news: chance of going above 3Β°C has gone down substantially, from 26% to 9%

Sounds like the Canadian banks could be offloading their underwater blanket appraisals to the bank of Canada, if only regular Canadians had that option

Yet nobody is talking about the single biggest line item in the federal budget: Old Age Security. A retired couple with $180,000 of combined income currently receives $18,000 in OAS income supports. Yet 400,000 seniors live in poverty and now cuts to First Nations social programs. Reform is needed!

The fed gov cuts to pay for military and wealthy tax cuts have rapidly expanded. My new analysis shows that most of the cuts will now be on transfers to other govs, non-profits and people. A stunning 1 in 5 dollars is just cuts to FN govs for basic social programs. @policyalternatives.ca πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

"Our peaceful trading partners are not our enemies; they are our allies. We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends β€” weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world β€” all while cynically waving the American flag."

A great article! I think my favourite line is "Housing needs cannot be fully assessed based only on the households that have managed to form during housing shortages."

Oversized pickups and SUVs: the new kings of the roads are dangerous, threatening lives and our living environments (Part 1) - Halifax Examiner In 2023, for every regular passenger car sold in Canada, six trucks – primarily larger pickups, SUVs, and vans - were sold. The same is true in Nova Scotia.

READ: β€œThis series of 3 articles looks at what is driving the trend for ever bigger and higher pickups and SUVs, and the many reasons this is bad for people, roads, cities, the environment, and the climate.”
