Good thread on this topic but also I’d add: in a newspaper there’s a physical difference between op-ed vs news sections w/ author name prominent.
On websites the boundary gets fuzzier. But in tweets/posts, it’s the newspaper account posting the tease/headline…context collapse is messy.

Plenty of people in power believe in trans rights and pursue use of their power to protect them yet are not offered NYT op-ed space to make the case for that opinion as often as anti-trans people are offered the same space. So what's going on there?

News outlets do not only publish op-eds like this. They frequently publish op-eds that are outside the mainstream set of opinions in an attempt to shift the Overton window of acceptable policy in one direction or another. Easy to demonstrate on e.g. NYT push for anti-trans stuff

"AI layoffs" like Block's are a race to the bottom that have nothing to do with productivity. You won't be replaced by AI, nor a person using AI, because backfills aren't real.

Jack Dorsey is copying the 2023 leadership framework:
- overhire
- lay everyone off
- pretend it's because of AI productivity gains
- stock go up

The layoff victims were some of the most productive, AI-pilled people in the company, but it didn't save them, because that's not what it was about.

I attended an AI symposium in SF around that time; Facebook’s plans were a big focus. I left me feeling disoriented as to exactly what value they would provide.
But there’s something baked into our culture that makes “AI” seem inherently valuable, an inevitable improvement.

A regime that kills its own people can be justifiably hated and its fall greeted with deep relief, while understanding that its fall being externally determined in a way that violates international law will pave the way for further human rights violations.

If you grew up evangelical / fundamentalist / charismatic / etc in that era, you were absolutely *immersed* in stories about the Final War To End All Wars and how it would pit good against evil and conclude in a final righting of wrongs and revealing of truths. The “Revelation” was literal.

At around 12-13 years old I fell hard for this stuff … but it didn’t take much maturing & education to outgrow it.

Evidently outgrowing it isn’t a thing for a lot of other adults.
