How high somebody puts Last Jedi on this list is a measure of something I’m not sure what but Pritzker gets a passing grade

it’s funny I didn’t like Solo because I thought they made Han too much of a dumb jock but then I paid attention to the original trilogy where yeah sure enough Han is a dumb jock (I’d conflated his Indy vibes) so now I need to rewatch Solo

I recently wandered onto the AliExpress app looking for a thing and it's such a disorienting gameified chaos engine β€” and yet weirdly compelling?
Normally I'd just throw up my hands and delete, but instead I'm on subreddits looking for pro tips on navigating this thing πŸ™ƒπŸ˜…

I will add the following: our students lack the research skills required to audit an LLM essay for errors. They don’t arrive on campus with these skills; we teach it to them over four long years. So throwing freshmen in the deep end and saying β€œswim your way to a shore of rectitude” is folly.

Let’s see if one single pundit who said there was some great realignment of American sentiment with this last election, based on what they saw on the Nazi-owned platform overrun by foreign actors, offers any retractions or corrections for their gullibility.

It might also be many of us are disabled/chronically ill and being loud online is the only way to be seen as we've been essentially blotted out of public life.

There are more people organizing and pushing back against the regime today than there were in the first term. There are more people in more places (rural towns and big cities across the country). I think it's really strange how resistant some people are to these facts. I wonder what's going on.

In Trump’s so-called β€œGolden Age of America”...

October saw the highest number of job cuts in over two decades.
Businesses have jacked up their prices by an average of 12%.
14 million Americans have utility debt so severe that it is being sent to collections.

Are we great yet?

Chart showing change in the use of online platforms. Over the past few years, four of them have grown in overall use among U.S. adults – TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and Reddit. TikTok: 37% of U.S. adults report using the platform, which is slightly up from last year and up from 21% in 2021. Instagram: Half of U.S. adults now report using it, which is on par with last year but up from 40% in 2021. WhatsApp and Reddit: About a third say they use WhatsApp, up from 23% in 2021. And 26% today report using Reddit, compared with 18% four years ago. While YouTube and Facebook continue to sit at the top, the shares of Americans who report using them have remained relatively stable in recent years.

I wonder if small businesses that only have a presence on FB and/or Instagram realize they are cutting out half to a quarter of their potential customer base?

But the imperfect fit was and has always been the compromise for being able to buy something same-day off the rack.

Per point 2, a $5 t-shirt is a crime against humanity and should not exist in a just world. Your clothes are not made by robots; they are made by people. A person sewed that $5 shirt.

23.11.2025 21:48 β€” πŸ‘ 57    πŸ” 5    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And the compromise for that time savings was that it didn't fit perfectly. The expectation was that alterations would be made to change the fit. We've lost this expectation in the last few decades (and a lot of clothing is no longer designed with alteration in mind)...

I have two things I would really like people to internalize about the fashion industry/garment manufacturing, and they are:

1. Mass manufactured clothes are only ever intended to fit "good enough," and;

2. Everything you wear was made by actual human people.

When I was like 7 (in the mid 70s) I was obsessed with old monster movies that I read about in library books. At one point I had my mom calling cable companies to see if we got cable if I could watch King Kong. Of course they didn’t know how to answer that.

THE LOST WORLD (1925) was actually the first silent movie I wanted to see. I was a tiny, dinosaur-obsessed kid and I saw clips in a dino documentary. I wanted more! I didn't know only fragments were known to survive at the time or that a full restoration was decades away.

Also goes back to @fasterandworse.com's point about how the more products make explicit claims about what they are for, the more they are accountable for doing that thing well. The ambiguity around what AI is supposed to be & do is a deliberate attempt to evade that accountability.
