Then the news talks about the issue in Dallas (pop 2.7M) and Williamson (pop 800K) as if they are the same?🤡

And they extend voting hours in both places, knowing that poor people are impacted more.🤡

In every institutional space I know, not only have Boomers failed to groom successors, they have actively blocked them … while moaning about the next generation failing to step up.

The only exception I know is the political right.

I said this a while ago but it bears repeating:

The U.S. right is fully captured by a) christian fascist accelerationists seeking to start the Biblical Apocalypse, & b) those actively manipulating (a) for profit.

Everything they claim to care about will last only so long as it serves (a) or (b).

These repeated attempts to "communicate" with AI left me feeling adrift from my own language. I thought of the opposite of poetry. Poetry sets you adrift from language in service of connection to meaning and other people; this is how it recreates language. This set me adrift in service of nothing.

The hallucination alone is a dealbreaker, obviously. But I was much more disturbed by the effect it had on my own sense of communication. Words are for connection. If you continually threw a rope into the darkness and no one caught it, you'd begin to think there was something wrong with the rope.

A few hours in, I had a hard time figuring out what the next steps were, and I literally do this (helping people, including myself, figure out what the next steps in writing are) for a living.

Strangely, it feels like the experience unmoored me from my own writing.

It returned something very recognizably AI--extreme and extremely confident declarations, evidence that doesn't support the conclusion, a bizarre sequence to the paragraphs whose logic I could not discern. I pointed out these problems and asked it to try again.

First, I gave it a vignette I wrote for the test, some extra notes, and "teacher feedback" for revision. It returned something tonally bizarre, veering wildly between the tone of the feedback (brisk) and of the vignette (vivid, descriptive). It also hallucinated twice after being told not to.

As part of an AI committee at my university, I spent this weekend trying out Claude (Opus 4.6) for writing, and I have to say, far beyond its hallucinations and the usual complaints, it is a baffling experience cognitively. I want to be more precise in my evaluation here than I usually am about AI.

LLMs are Frankensteins of compression, noise reduction and translation technologies. A good way to think of it is, if you try to write something from nothing, the “nothing” that fills the gaps is (more or less) semi-random noise translated into human language with your prompt as the cipher.

A ★★★½ review of Prometheus (2012) Rewatched this for the first time since release.  It actually holds up better than I remember. Maybe because I’m not bringing “expectations” to it?  As a standalone somewhat existential thriller sci-fi movie, it’s good fun. The best parts are the production design & cinematography — which, really, are my favorite aspects of the Scott directed movies I actually like most.  The design in this film is just gorgeous, high-style retro-sci-fi … the suits, helmets, etc are maybe my favorite design of any sci-fi movie tbh. Eye candy can carry almost any film for me, but this has enough other good factors

Watched Prometheus (2012) last night…was more enjoyable than I remembered; even if it had no other merits, the production design is enough to keep me engaged. Just gorgeously filmed retro-futurist eye candy all around.
