I was asked recently, what the biggest improvement in critical care that has occurred in my career: without hesitation, it has been vaccines. Varicella, HIB, Meningococcus type B, COVID-19, rotavirus and now RSV, on top of the previous ones. Diseases that used to cause so much death. #PedsICU

Unvaccinated Child Dies of Measles in Texas, Officials Say (Gift Article) At least 124 cases of measles have been identified in Texas since late January, mostly among children and teenagers who are either unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown, officials say.

Damn it - THIS is why we developed a vaccine for this highly contagious and potentially devastating disease.

As awful as this looks…it’s even more frightening when they’re on a ventilator and do this. The advice a few years ago for pregnant women to get vaccinated was a great move.

A reminder that the improvements that we’ve seen in life expectancy over the centuries are largely driven by preventing infants and children from dying. If you survived past childhood, you probably were going to live to 60.

Agree - kids seem to be at negligible risk of CPM, so I tend to lean into quicker correction of hypoNa (bolus 3% until symptoms resolve and then aim for 10 meq/day but tolerate a bit faster). I’m more careful the other way given cerebral edema concerns, and lower risk of morbidity from hyperNa

Ah - but their β€˜rapid’ definition was >= 8-10 meq/L per 24h, and 10 meq/L per 24h has generally been our target when we say β€˜slow’ correction….
