From the perspective of Wales and, specifically, Welsh speaker numbers, EWC discontinuation poses a real issue β in particular, over the quality of alternative data. The decision about whether there will be another EWC will be made by the UK Government. A decision about a census in Wales should be made in Wales: i.e. by the Welsh Government subject to Senedd consent. It should be put beyond doubt that the CA is devolved to Wales, as it is to Scotland. It is not clear why the decision to hold a census for Wales is made by the UK Government because the reserved powers model now applies to Wales.
Why there should be a Wales-only census nation.cymru/opinion/why-...
Argument from Dr Huw Evans that, if the UK Government discontinues the decennial Census for England and Wales, the Welsh Government should be able to mandate a Census for Wales alone.

π Job Alert!!! π The first in a series of long term posts within the SDRUK Geographic Data Service which will launch next year -this one is based in UCL- https://buff.ly/4fSyChU - and builds on the work that we have done over the past ten years as part of the CDRC. Deadline 12th Dec!!!
10.12.2024 13:49 β π 9 π 8 π¬ 0 π 0Day 30 #30DayMapChallenge - Final Map
Todays map is an exploration of small area Gross Value Added (GVA) data in England and was an excuse to look at these in the context of retail centres. All #rstats code provided, but a bit rough!
Day 29 #30DayMapChallenge - Overture
We have been working with these data quite a bit since they arrived and have created ETL to produce an updatable POI dataset for the UK. This #rstats map illustrates how you can use these data to map coffee shops.
Day 28 #30DayMapChallenge - The Blue Planet
One of the most popular CDRC open data products is our Access to Healthy Assets and Hazards index. This includes a measure of access to bluespace which is today's map. The blog post contains links to the interactive version.
Day 27 #30DayMapChallenge - Micromapping
This is a quick example of using #rstats to produce cartography from OpenStreetMap. In this instance a map is create for my local park.

26.11.2024 15:08 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Day 26 #30DayMapChallenge - Map Projections
Today is a quick #rstats exploration that compares areas to explore distortion between two projections - the Eckert IV projection and the Mercator projection.
Day 25 #30DayMapChallenge - Heat
Staying warm is difficult for many people as the price of heating their homes has risen in the UK. In this work we explored the geography of gas consumption trends in the residential sector across England and Wales.
Day 24 #30DayMapChallenge - Only circular shapes
This is another #rstats post which uses Ordnance Survey greenspace data and a simple accessibility measure to map proximity to an allotment in Greater London. The circles are scaled by their proximity.
Day 23 #30DayMapChallenge - Memory
I have taken a collective view on this topic today. This is a map of cognitive geography and place associations extracted from some work looking at where people talk about on Reddit

Day 22 #30DayMapChallenge - 2 Colours
This map was created in #rstats and features just 2 colours. Left is where Labour were the majority party in the 2024 UK General Election. The map on the right is the subset where the Reform party held second place!
Day 21 #30DayMapChallenge - Conflict
This is not an area that I research in particular, however I have done some work on the visualisation / mapping of UK crime data, and I wrote a short paper about this a reasonable length of time ago!

21.11.2024 05:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Final book which I weirdly never touched as an UG as I had ruled it out because of colour content. As a postdoc I ended up working on the books teaching materials, but generally is still my favorite GIS intro. The first few chapters are classics and fundamentally shaped how I see GIS and GISc.
20.11.2024 17:01 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was given this book by Stewart, Martin and Chris 3 months into my PhD as part of a workshop on GWR hosted at UCSB. This provided an excellent reader on this particular approach, which at the time was my first foray into more sophisticated statistical methods.
20.11.2024 17:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This was another UG book that I read. Probably the most niche topic for a book that I have ever read, but contains everything that you need to know about the fundamentals of locating things by postcode! Foundational stuff if you are in the UK.
20.11.2024 17:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This one got me interested in research as an UG. By complete chance I end up doing a PhD in the lab where Martin D was based a couple of years later. This is still a fascinating read from a pre social media era!
