Mostly science related. Occasional gardening to be feared. "Aren't you the guy who built that robot?"

08.10.2025 09:57 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Speaking next week in Toronto at the Acceleration Consortium (@accelerationc.bsky.social). It's possible to join online (link below). In part, I'll be talking about our new work on LLM reasoning for robotic experiments. I've teed this up below with a link to Noam Chomsky, who isn't an LLM fan.
07.10.2025 17:14 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0(he does then go on describe LLMs as having "no scientific interest, no intellectual interest")
07.10.2025 17:09 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0If you're interested, here is a gloriously curmudgeonly interview with Chomsky, much of which I'd agree with: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_04E.... Though he does concede that it (i.e., LLMs) could "conceivably replace some routine work". Youch!
07.10.2025 16:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0But I'm looking forward to giving this talk. In part, I'll discuss how LLMs are helping us edge toward more human-like decisions in closed loop experiments. Or you could argue that these are not human-like at all, and that GPT is, as Noam Chomsky put it, "glorified autofill". Happy to debate!!

Come join us in Oxford! Two positions open right now in @oxfordbiochemistry.bsky.social
Itโs a great place to work. Really supportive colleagues, great students, colleges provide a unique social environment - in summary, itโs a lot of fun.
I don't normally indulge in Chemistry Nobel Prize speculation but this year I'm having a punt. ยฃ20 each way on Frรฉchet and Wilkinson for chemically amplified photoresists

I could bore you rigid on this topic, suffice to say I have about 20 go-to non-instrumental albums that have become โeffectively instrumentalโ to me since I no longer really register the words. Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order would be one example, heavily used for proposals โฆ
