Fire bans are still in place and, let's be honest, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, more areas will likely be added over the next few days. Be sure to check the burn ban map daily at 2 PM - because apparently fire is a bit of a diva and only updates after lunch. Now... on to the big dry elephant in the room: drought. We're talking extreme drought conditions for Hants, Kings, Annapolis, and Digby counties. Some of these areas have seen barely a drop all month. Personally, living in Hants, I've only seen 32mm of rain in July - that's less water than a sad juice box. And no, there's no big system on the horizon to save us. Maybe a rogue thunderstorm will bless us, but don't bank on it. If you're having flashbacks to last year, you're not alone. July 2023 and 2024 brought flooding rains to the very same areas. Now, we're dealing with dust, cracks in the soil, and confused ducks wondering where their ponds went. It's like Mother Nature gave us a flood one year and thought we needed a dry run the next. In my humble, completely unqualified meteorological opinion, this lack of tropical storm activity could be a major factor. The past couple of summers, we saw lots of tropical leftovers moving up our way. This year? Not even a whisper. It's too quiet... almost like the ocean is holding its breath.
