I’ve been working with data for about 20 years and I wish I’d learned these tips when I was a PhD student.
A few simple changes to how you store your data can save you hours later. Future you will be thankful you read this post.
Anyone else learn this the hard way?

The cost of solar has fallen 99.8% since 1975 and 94.4% since 2008. Solar, firmed by batteries and supported by wind, is our energy future. Everything else is just noise and rounding errors. #Bettrification #BESS

Several chocolate cupcakes with buttercream icing. There is white icing around the perimeter with chocolate in the center
Today was my longest ever treadmill run: 25km!
The treadmill is so boring but there’s tons of snow outside and I need the miles. I made it fun by eating cupcakes every few miles.

GOOD NEWS: The world’s largest steam-producing heat pump is now online in Finland, delivering 12 MW of superheated steam from waste heat and CO₂-free electricity.
Proof that industrial heat can be electrified at scale.

A frozen Lake Superior with little snow covered peaks across they bay
It was a snowy 14km run today. Deep snow along the path means sinking in on every step.
Sometimes runners need to train our Grit, so we’ll be tougher the next time we need to use it. This was good Grit Training!

Individualized mRNA vaccines evoke durable T cell immunity in adjuvant TNBC - Nature
In a phase 1 trial, personalized mRNA vaccines tailored to individual tumour mutations in triple-negative breast cancer induced robust, long-lasting T cell responses and improved prognosis.
More hope from mRNA vaccines. In this instance, individualized vaccines were given to women with triple negative breast cancer following surgery and adjuvant therapy. The results are quite remarkable. Despite cancer finding a ‘T cell-evading’ work-around in some patients.

Lake Superior from above. There are big chunks of ice in the lake, but it is mostly liquid
I ran my first Half Marathon of the year today, along Lake Superior.
We had a nice thaw and it was great to get a little taste of Spring before another snowstorm tomorrow

“Sorry to delay our meeting, but it’s sunny and the temp might get above freezing for the first time this year.”
It didn’t get above freezing, but we had a sunny 15km on snowy trails.

A river flowing, bounded by snow covered rocks
After a 3-month offseason, I'm back to training today! 10 easy miles to get started.
In the offseason I focused on limiting my run distance and strength training. I'm so excited to be back to training, and hoping it's not too much longer before the trails dry out.

Industrial heat is one of the hardest parts of the energy transition.
This sand battery is now delivering fossil-free heat for industry, storing renewable electricity as high-temperature heat and releasing it when needed. Simple idea, big impact.

People hanging around bonfires with a little ski hill in the background. There are railings on the hill so that skiers and snowboarders can use them for tricks.
The windchill is in the negative teens, so folks are bundled up
This weekend our town has a festival to celebrate Heikki Lunta, the god of snow.
We honor Heikki Lunta tonight with a Rail Jam: snowboard tricks with music.

`Atmosphere` by Taylor Jenkins Reid
A space adventure turned disaster. A beautiful love story set against the backdrop of the Space Program and LGBT rights in the 1980s.

Professional portrait of atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon. She has short, tousled gray hair, wears large round dark-framed glasses, and is smiling gently. She is dressed in a textured navy-blue blazer over a black top, with a bright multicolored floral/paisley scarf tied at the neck. Her arms are crossed confidently in front of her chest. She wears a silver watch on her left wrist. The background shows a softly blurred indoor space with warm architectural tones.
Atmospheric chemist Susan Solomon was born #OTD in 1956.
Solomon, working with colleagues at NOAA, proposed/confirmed the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole, chlorofluorocarbons. She led the Nat'l Ozone Expedition to Antarctica to collect evidence & was the only woman on the team. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

Cover of the book The Wayfinder by Adam Johnson
Just finished The Wayfinder by Adam Johnson.
Awesome book! It’s fun reading about 13th century Polynesian explorers. But it is an epic; I needed to consult the cast of characters. If you’re looking for an adventure that'll keep you occupied, check it out.

A snowy cliff hanging into Lake Superior. The waves are hitting the bottom of the cliff and there are big icicles above
I had a hard 17 km run along Lake Superior today. 6 inches of fresh snow on the path. Snow drifts up to my knees. Heavy winds.
Don’t pass up an opportunity to test your grit!

Three deer in the middle of the road. There are big snowbanks on the sides of the road. Snow is falling hard
Following 3 deer down the street while driving home.
They can’t jump off the road because the snow piles are so tall, so we slowly trot along…

It’s difficult to display the magnitude of our snow, but I have to throw it higher than my head to clear the sidewalk. (I’m about 6’ tall.)

The shore of Lake Superior with a few snowy ice chunks in the water. There’s an island a bit off shore and it is foggy
Went for a 16km run along Lake Superior today. She was calm and foggy.
I tried to do speed work but the footing was snowy and icy, so I put in a lot more effort and didn’t get much faster. Oh well! Can’t complain when you get views like this.

Great job, Dick!
It's nice to get to those round number goals, but it's better to listen to your body and get healthy. Plenty of time for more distance in 2026.
