The foundations of Western hegemony are collapsing. The break with the post-war liberal order is imminent and irreversible. What the world without common rules will look like remains to be seen, but the rivalry between several superpowers is emerging. The United States no longer has the economic and moral basis and appeal to represent the idea of a universal order. The unpredictable and destructive behavior of those in power in Washington means that fewer and fewer countries believe in a lasting relationship with the Americans. Most countries must now consider how they will relate to the world's strongest nations. The challenge is how to create a new international order with the ideals and principles that, at least after the war, brought stability, prosperity, and freedom to the Western world.
The words in the screenshot below aren't from Mark Carney's speech at Davos but from the essay "Exit from Our Age of Disorder" by writer Bruno Maçães, published Nov 2025.
Maçães bid farewell to the liberal order months before the Canadian PM reached the same conclusion.

Europe must break from America
Warnings about the end of the postwar world are common sense, not alarmism

Outstanding reflections on the Gaza genocide:
"How were the horrors of Gaza possible? Quite simply, because those who tried to stop or expose them quickly discovered that our political systems were committed to the genocide and there simply was no way to give voice or power to a different politics."

"The main way the genocide has been actively supported by our democracies is less the flow of weapons & intelligence.. important as these are, than the organised repression & punishment of everyone who dared to call attention to events in Gaza or offer criticism of Israel"

"The important question is not whether a genocide has been taking place in Gaza, but how it happened and how it was allowed to happen."

I wrote a personal essay on what it has meant for me witnessing events in Gaza since October 2023. I would be grateful if you help spread it. These were painful, disturbing conclusions to reach. But inescapable…
