‘I’m standing up for everything that I believe in,’ say land defenders preparing to appeal TMX convictions Secwépemc and Nlaka’pamux activists arrested at pipeline site ceremony await Supreme Court of Canada’s green light to appeal, as allies fundraise for legal costs

“This is a very layered fight that we’re up against,” said Secwépemc land defender April Thomas, “because it’s right down from the individual level, right up to fighting for collective rights and title.”

After Indigenous teen’s stabbing, his family says the system failed to stop his bullying Foster parents in ‘Courtenay, B.C.’ speak out after a string of alleged incidents targeting them and their 16-year-old foster son, as they wait for trial

A 16-year-old's stabbing earlier this year wasn’t merely the result of bullying, his foster mom believes.

To her, his experiences reflect a history of colonial systems failing to uphold the safety, rights, and well-being of an Indigenous Youth.

We need funding streams that support an impactful, equitable wave of journalism — and not just funnelling resources into the status quo or to support quotas without any quality standard. Not all content is created equal + we need to remember why journalism is important beyond just for the sake of it

I think news outlets should receive funds based on their quality of reporting, representation/voice, community need, and a demonstrated impact. It shouldn't be purely about quotas (LJI) or existing spending (CJC).

28.05.2025 19:42 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Exclusionary rules aside — the fact that CJC is distributing funds to news outlets based on how much they spent employing staff in past years will reinforce powerful legacy institutions while keeping the ones without resources in scarcity. It isn't equitable.
