We need funding streams that support an impactful, equitable wave of journalism — and not just funnelling resources into the status quo or to support quotas without any quality standard. Not all content is created equal + we need to remember why journalism is important beyond just for the sake of it

I think news outlets should receive funds based on their quality of reporting, representation/voice, community need, and a demonstrated impact. It shouldn't be purely about quotas (LJI) or existing spending (CJC).

Exclusionary rules aside — the fact that CJC is distributing funds to news outlets based on how much they spent employing staff in past years will reinforce powerful legacy institutions while keeping the ones without resources in scarcity. It isn't equitable.
