E.P.A. Says It Will Eliminate Its Scientific Research Arm

Difficult to put into words how devastating this is for environmental and public health protection. We will be less safe, more at risk, and our environment will be far more polluted and degraded because of this.

Blood–Brain and Blood–Gill Barrier Disruption in Coho Salmon Exposed to Roadway Runoff and 6PPD-Quinone The tire-derived chemical N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-Nβ€²-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone) causes acute mortality in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), yet its mechanisms of toxicity remain ...

I have been waiting for this one...so basically what happened when 6PPD-Q exposed to coho is a brain hemorrhage, stroke, and oxygen depletion.

"Whether we like it or not, chemistry researchers are required to be something analogous to small business owners or entrepreneurs. We need to β€˜sell our brands’ to get grants and collaborations and to recruit trainees..." this is sadly, true.

Controlling our online professional persona Nature Chemistry - Modern scientists exist within the digital world. Shira Joudan describes how an online presence is beneficial to researchers, and what a baseline presence can look like.

In this issue of Nature Chemistry, I write about the importance of having an online presence that we control ourselves. Since you're all on Bluesky, you're probably already on top of things!

NSF budget proposal slashes funding across the agency The proposed 57% cut will drive down the agency’s funding rate and eliminate training programs

The Trump admin wants to cut the NSF's budget by 57%.

In terms of directorates, EDU and ENG would see the biggest cuts at 75%, while MPS is looking at a ~67% cut. The proposal also defunds nearly all postdoc programs and slashes the NSF GRFP budget by 55%.

This is a very interesting article, worth the read. I've noted a large decrease in insects over my lifetime, but I thought it was just local pollution/pesticides. Their sensitivity to water and heat stress is a big concern for even relatively 'untouched' ecosystems.

This tracks. Normally we aim for a class of 10-15 in physics and astro at U Oregon, and admit 30-40 to get there. This year we admitted SIX because we couldn’t have a larger class, and admitted one at a time off the wait list to reach that number.

Next year is unlikely to be better. 😣
