On Tuesday March 25, 2025 news outlets reported on the abduction and disappearing by federal agents of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts University student.

Common Cause Massachusetts is responding with the following statement:

Video footage obtained by NBC News shows the moment Rumeysa Ozturk was arrested. Oztur is a Turkish national and doctoral student at Tufts University with a valid student visa, her lawyer says.

This is terrifying and yet another sign that authoritarianism is on the rise in America. Rumeysa Ozturk is entitled to due process and should be freed immediately.

5. While there's much to be angry about at the national level, it's important to also focus our power and energy on strengthening state and local democracy in this moment.

There is much work needed on those fronts, like passing Same Day Registration, Guaranteed Remote Meeting Access and more.

4. Build your own civic infrastructure; a small group of friends who share your passion. Meet regularly and take action together (like phone-banking lawmakers) but also to check in and process things. This work requires sustained hope, and that's tough to do alone.

2. With so many dizzying headlines, the work can feel overwhelming. I recommend that you pick 2-3 specific issues that you care strongly about and go deep into those issues.

3. The legislative branch is SO important right now. Routinely engage your members of Congress with a specific ask.
