Many thanks.
Itβs going to be many yrs until the current wild populations of beavers expend into Norfolk. Hopefully youβll be able to venture out and find some, maybe into the badlands of the SW where beavers more widespread.

Observer of the natural world, mostly in UK. Mammals, insects, birds, plants, fungi it, they all catch my eye and via photographs and video, I like to share them with you.
Many thanks.

πIndeed, itβs really just a giant squish tailed vole.
Iβll cost me a small fortune in pound coins trying to get one in place.

In the evening, one of the kits briefly inspected the hole, it sniffed and pawed the wet entrance soil, then turned and went about its beavering.

It was in fact a #Beaver.
These incredible rodents excavate their lodge or burrow entrances underwater, this offers them protection from predators, however, sometimes a day rest will be excavated on a ledge near to the waters edge and this is what I believe this is. @beavertrust.bsky.social

Didn't this go well?
Actually it feels like my posts aren't liked much or being seen. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Anyway, well done to @parliamentarygoose.bsky.social for being the closest with his suggestion of a Water vole, even if you were the only person to make a guess.

A hole by this UK river edge is being worked on, who could it be?

Long overdue sediment removal needed at mine, so we spent a few hrs shifting some and saving what creatures we could find.
22 brook lamprey larvae (ammocoetes) were found and held in an observation tank before moving them elsewhere. (After a little filming session).

A photograph of a flea.
A photo of a scabbed over wound on a dead Bat, the skin is bare around the apparent wound, elsewhere soft brown fur covers the mammals body.
Pretty sure that there's no #Fridayflea hash tag anywhere.
Anyway, here's one I found on a deceased π¦
Unsure if it's a #Bat specific species.
Also would any bat people like to tell me more about the anatomical feature seen on it's lower abdomen? Healing umbilical scar?

Photo of a female sparrow hawk. A medium sized hawk, brown in colour with a barred chest stands in long vegetation looking to to the right of picture.
The same bird, this time stood over it's prey, a wood pigeon. The chest of the pigeon is plucked and has most of the flesh removed. The hawk is facing the camera, its yellow eyes fixed on the lens.
Had to down tools today and go grab the camera.
I then spent the next 40mins with this female Sparrowhawk whilst she worked away on her Wood pigeon prey.

Sheβs been filming the beavers on the river Otter for almost as long as theyβve been living there, in particular the tagged pair now affectionately called mr and mrs Bob..
A few hrs Moth trapping on the #Quantockhills last night gave us time to look for other amazing things. Limax cinereoniger -Ash black slugs were about and we managed to witness their impressive mating behaviour. #slugs #ukwildlife #nature

05.07.2025 19:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Well that's it for the Puss moth caterpillars, the last one of 6 went off to pupate yesterday. I managed some more timelapses as it built it's cocoon between a log and pile of cardboard. This is 4hrs worth of building work. #Teammoth #ukWildlife #uknature #moth #invertebrates #insects #caterpiller

Sad that I broke the initial protective layer, which did however give me a chance to ponder over the architectural development of this cocoon.
As a builder it really got me thinking..
A great place to see them, with all the extra handouts from visitors they're very confiding. We were very fortunate to see Ibex just off the roadside there a few yrs back. Lots of stunning plants and insects too.

02.07.2025 14:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I unintentionally damaged the silken cocoon as the puss moth built it. The caterpillar didnβt take long to patch things up. 20min later in time-lapse. #teammoth #ukwildlife #mothsmatter

A head on photo of the impressive looking Puss moth caterpillar which is upside down on a poplar leaf stem. Its pale brown head is surrounded by a vividly pink shroud which has two black eye spots above the real head. Its green body has six true legs that are black and yellow striped.
Cerura vinula final instar around 23 days after hatching.
In around a weeks time, theyβll go purple and seek out a suitable place to form their cocoon. #teammoth #mothsmatter #uknature #ukwildlife

I mean, who else posts such detailed videos of shatapillers?

A photo of an Adult Long-Eared Owl in a lime tree. This bird and it's mate nested in the middle of Vienna, Austria and its said they raised three chicks. The location was University court yard filled with mature Lime trees. I eventually found it just a few metres up, right above a paved path where students, lecturers and visitors frequently passed under. We had amazing views of it which we shared with anyone interested, watching it preen and doze through the morning.
The problem with taking 100s of photos per week is not knowing what to share next. As I've been recently sharing little things, how about something with feathers right in the middle of #Vienna.
The crazy bird and its mate chose the grounds of a University to nest in. See ALT for more. #Owls #Birds
Close up photo of young fish in their egg sacs. These are a species of Goby and they were about the break free of the sacs and begin life as free swimming young. In the photo are tens of silver eyes each with a dark centre. The bodies are transparent with just the pale cream blob of internal organs visible.
Something fishy was going on under this rock, 100s of eyes were looking up at me, scanning around with that look of guilt.
