My Blood Glitters Like Rubies in the Thrumming Dark, 2025

This piece came to me while I was obsessively photographing pomegranates that had exploded like strange stars on their bare trees. Weird, exquisite jewels rotting on the branch. The world hands us peculiar beauty when we pay attention.

A loggerhead shrike, with its head turned to our left and wings open to each side, carries a blue ribbon in its beak. The shrike also holds a spear with its feet, the point of the spear on our right has torn through a bag of coins to let them spill out (representing putting and end to greed). Nightshade is held with the spear in the bird's foot on our left. The shrike has an orange halo with a star motif in it, and yellow flames behind that. I'm just frustrated seeing so much AI use for resistance imagery when art is so important in that space. Everyone says find your lane, where you are most effective. Then the public acts like our lane doesn't exist because they can just use AI.

Should we make an infographic about how to find and collaborate with artists?

Are there other artists out there who would want to offer pro bono protest art in collaboration with resistance groups?

Cuckoos are a favorite family of birds for me! They're so fascinating and varied.

The shrike uses a spear to destroy a symbol of greed (bag of coins). The nightshade represents transformation and change. The shrike is turning away from greed towards defense of the people.

The design will have the English translation shown more prominently under the artwork, but the whole design mirrors the crest of the US, including a bird holding a ribbon with Latin text on it. I've been working on this design for months, and just need to finish the text part.

I'm finishing up a protest design that will be free for non-commercial use- would anyone be able to translate these phrases or something equivalent into Latin? I just need one phrase, whichever sounds best.
