Great to see three Red-necked Stints this morning. It's a scarce autumn passage migrant inland here. These birds were with 50 Little Ringed Plovers and a few Common Sandpipers on rainwater pools created on recent landfill #shorebirds #birding 🪶

Juveniles of Dark-sided (Muscicapa sibirica 乌鹟 Wū wēng) and Asian Brown Flycatchers (Muscicapa dauurica 北灰鹟 Běi huī wēng) on the patch. NocMig suggests most adults pass through as early as late July and early August, with sight records showing that juveniles follow a few weeks later. #birds #beijing

Any breeding confirmed anywhere? Despite the regular large flocks around the north of the Tonle Sap there has bizarrely never been a single nest record or breeding evidence of any sort

Brahminy Kite however is not doing so well and remains pretty much confined to the coast or the major Tonle Sap and upper Mekong river systems

Glossy Ibis has also increased here in recent years, still largely restricted to the Tonle Sap floodplain, but expanding and you can now see flocks around and south of Phnom Penh. I assume this is due to improved success of breeding colonies which potentially has knock on impacts regionally?

Hopefully this represents at least a stabilisation of Cambodia's Sarus Cranes, but still a horrible crash from the 869 recorded in 2011. Large scale conversion of breeding habitat, primarily to agriculture, was a significant driver of the decline

New White-eared Night Heron breeding grounds discovered in China Chinese ornithologists have identified six new nesting sites for the endangered White-eared Night Heron in 11 provinces, revealing both broader distribution and persistent threats. Despite possible underestimates of its population, declines in key colonies highlight the urgency for habitat protection, public awareness, and mitigation of human impacts, as China still lacks designated protected areas for this elusive species.

Chinese researchers have identified six new breeding sites for White-eared Night Heron, an Endangered species thought to number fewer than 1,000 individuals worldwide:

Spoon-billed Sandpipers observed at previously unknown breeding site Conservationists have been left stunned after a satellite-tagged Spoon-billed Sandpiper revealed a previously unknown breeding location for the species. The bird, known as 'K9', was first tracked to a mountainous area of the Russian Far East in June 2024, returning again there this summer. In July 2025, Russian scientists visited the remote area, which has never previously been surveyed, and found three nesting pairs.

Found a pair of Indochinese Bushlark in a new location this morning. They were running around in the grass like buttonquails, and occasionally cocking their tails. Difficult to photograph until this one popped up briefly #birding 🪶
