Three Red-necked Stints, Hun Sen Boulevard, Phnom Penh, 20 September 2025
Great to see three Red-necked Stints this morning. It's a scarce autumn passage migrant inland here. These birds were with 50 Little Ringed Plovers and a few Common Sandpipers on rainwater pools created on recent landfill #shorebirds #birding πͺΆ

04.09.2025 08:26 β π 12 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Any breeding confirmed anywhere? Despite the regular large flocks around the north of the Tonle Sap there has bizarrely never been a single nest record or breeding evidence of any sort
04.09.2025 01:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Brahminy Kite however is not doing so well and remains pretty much confined to the coast or the major Tonle Sap and upper Mekong river systems
01.09.2025 06:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Glossy Ibis has also increased here in recent years, still largely restricted to the Tonle Sap floodplain, but expanding and you can now see flocks around and south of Phnom Penh. I assume this is due to improved success of breeding colonies which potentially has knock on impacts regionally?

Hopefully this represents at least a stabilisation of Cambodia's Sarus Cranes, but still a horrible crash from the 869 recorded in 2011. Large scale conversion of breeding habitat, primarily to agriculture, was a significant driver of the decline

Great to see a young Black-shouldered Kite this morning and know they have successfully bred on the patch again. The species is under increasing threat in Cambodia as fledglings are taken from the nest to feed a sadly growing fashion for keeping birds of prey πͺΆ

Red Avadavat is a rare wet season visitor. This pair this morning, the male in non-breeding plumage, showed a lot of yellow on the belly, but are of the red-bellied subspecies punicea

Male (front) and much brighter female (rear) Small Buttonquail, Hun Sen Boulevard, Phnom Penh, April 2025
Probably my best ever views this morning of a pair of foraging Common (Small) Buttonquail. I think it is a relatively recent coloniser of the patch, and appears to occupy the same landfill grass/scrub areas as the far commoner Barred Buttonquail #birding πͺΆ
