Plot showing discharge capacity as a function of C-rate in EOL NMC cathodes. Capacity drops off starting at about 1C, with EOL samples losing capacity more than pristine samples. For any given layer of the pouch cell, samples taken from the periphery have lower capacity than those taken from the center.
Plot showing degree of cracking for several samples taken from the EOL pouch cell. The layer periphery has the largest degree of cracking, which correlates with the observed capacity loss and impedance growth.
In this paper, Melissa collected samples from throughout end-of-life (EoL) pouch cells, finding spatial variation in degradation both between layers and within a given layer.
Namely, samples from layer edges showed more crack and more degradation than samples from layer centers.

An excel spreadsheet showing an R-C circuit and the so-called "Randle's Circuit" impedance data, on Nyquist plots, based on fundamental physical constants (exchange current density, capacitance, and diffusion coefficient).
This semester we are using our group meetings to dig in and gain better understanding of #EIS, deriving physics-based equivalent circuit model equations.

Using AFM-based resistivity measurements, Zoey shows how thermal curing of Si-PEO anodes induces phase segregation between the low-resistance carbon binder and the high-resistance Si active material, which benefits the electrodes' electrochemical and mechanical properties.

In it, C. Randall looked at thin-film Nafion on carbon substrates to better understand Nafion structure in PEM fuel cell and hydrolyzed catalyst layers. We find structure can vary with substrate hydrophobicity & roughness, but the non-interfacial region is consistent across substrates.
