Damn that article is really cutting through. One of the most aggressive free birth advocates in that space who we quoted in Ep5 said reading extracts has "given her a lot of pause". Also admitted that she in fact went for ultrasounds at 24 weeks while loudly claiming she was doing "wild pregnancy" 😒

Agreed, there are safe ways to do a homebirth. "Free birthing" is something else altogether

The reporters do seem to be holding medical trauma and bad US care for something incredibly horrifying on its own terms.

One of the things I'm always struck by whenever I investigate the topic of wellness or alternative medicine is how much the promise of empowerment and autonomy is used as a cover for absolving the practitioner of responsibility when it all goes wrong. And this is highlighted so explicitly here.

I'm one of the few people who ChatGPT has made *less* lazy because one of my most common writing tics has become one of the main AI "tells". So now if I want to think of a quick and easy way to move on I can't write "it's not just X, it's Y" bc I don't want to be called a clanker 😭

One thing I always notice watching old films is that beauty standards for men have really skyrocketed in a way I'd probably be mad about if I were male. Used to be if you had all your teeth and didn't look like you'd spent the night in a bin they'd put you in a movie and call you a sex symbol!
