Alberta to invoke notwithstanding clause to shield 3 transgender bills from court challenges | CBC News The Alberta government has tabled legislation that seeks to invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield a suite of bills that affects transgender youth and adults from legal challenges.

I am pretty sure that when Merv Leitch and Peter Lougheed first created the notwithstanding clause, they didn’t mean it to be deployed to bully and oppress literal school children. #ableg #abpoli #TransRightsAreHumanRights #Alberta #notwithstandingclause

For me preemptively using the notwithstanding clause to strip kids of their Charter rights and prevent legal challenges shows that Alberta government knows their shitty discriminatory bills will not stand up to legal scrutiny from the jump. This is lazy ass governance as per usual.

Opinion: Notwithstanding clause never meant to be used to benefit the government Dave King was was there when clause was born in Alberta cabinet. It was never meant to be used for the benefit of the government itself.

David King was there, he knows.

"It was never meant to be used for the benefit of the government itself, only for the benefit of citizens (the public). It was never meant to be introduced in the middle of a long-standing process, to force a particular outcome."

Alberta conservative voters: β€œFloor crossers are SCUM!”

Also Alberta conservative voters: *elect a Premier who crossed the floor when she was leader of the official opposition, & has a Chief of Staff who - as an MLA - crossed the floor so many times we named him β€œRoomba Rob”.

Rick Bell has upped himself yet again.

His headline claims there is no jail for CP.

There is absolutely still jail, up to a max of 14 years (and the max should be higher).

Rick used be be about speaking truth to power.

Now he’s just a mouthpiece FOR power.

Letters like this make me proud of the #ForeverCanadian movement that we’ve built. It proves that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Albertans have found their voice and are now exercising it.

Populist politicians have divided us for far too long. Now is the time to focus on unity.

The UCP government created and championed the Citizens Initiative Act as a fundamental part of our democracy - giving citizens the right to launch petitions and recall elected officials.
Now they're walking away from that commitment.

Exciting!

New road signs have been approved by Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen.

We didn't need to use the Notwithstanding clause either and a $5.6 million a sole-source contract has been awarded to a private contractor.

Alberta Strong and Free, Notwithstanding The UCP's Bill 2 skirts the legislature and the courts, leaving it up to the public to push back swiftly

"Bill 2 is perfectly legal."

"The kids need to go back to class."

I agree.

That doesn't mean the premier should've done an endrun around the legislature and the courts.

If the back-to-work law was defensible, why didn't she defend it before leaving the country?
