It's not that it's hard in neovim, it's that in helix it's really trivial, it's just 2 lines vs the 10 or so lines you need in neovim

Neovim is my main editor but I have to commend Helix for making it so straightforward to add arbitrary executables as an LSP

Expert like Lexical spawns a separate vm to compile and analyze your code. It is possible that vm is taking some time to start and your editor is sending messages before it's up(thus the connection error)
Can you share more of the logs and open an issue in the expert repo?

Protip: relying on internal, undocumented behavior is fine if you gate that logic behind a version check. Sometimes you have to retroactively implement a feature that is only possible after version X and requires poking under the hood for versions <X, then this is fine.

Expert is being actively worked on, and a lot of the changes to ElixirLS will be ported to Expert(and Łukasz has done a lot of work to make this easy to do), so it's not exactly a new direction.

I'm so used to LSP features not working that when developing the LSP itself I forget there's things I can now use and I end up doing things manually. I think it's a bit funny.

This pisses me off a bit, when I was working on Embers I spent a lot of time making sure the profile pic and the banner would always perfectly align in the very same way no matter the context, but Discord doesn't bother to do it. Part of the appeal of banners is funny compositions.

It seems you can designate a successor for your whole account, and not per-repo or per-org. I think I can use that but there's a bunch of private projects that I'm not sure should be passed down that way

I have no intention of giving up the project and I intend to keep maintaining it for as long as I'm able to, perhaps "ownership" was not the right word in the OP but rather "housing" it for the long term
