DM Tip: Wanna make impressive NPCs? Give them goals & quirks. A shopkeeper with a stutter who dreams of adventure is way more memorable than just a regular shopkeeper who only exists in the context of his store.

Ugh I hate when modules do this to ‘demonstrate the strength of an npc’ or the ‘npc is a twat and we need a way to show this’ - there are much better ways than taking the accomplishment from your players and deflating what should be a celebratory moment.

Example: The PCs discover their beloved NPC (the rogue's adoptive father) has secretly been helping the BBEG. When they finally confront the BBEG they ask him how they corrupted the NPC and the BBEG responds, "Ah yes, it was easy, he simply asked I spare your friend" and he motions toward the rogue.

DM tip: If a beloved NPC is going to betray your Player Characters, a great thing to do is ensure the reason is something that the players will empathize with or find complex emotion amidst the betrayal.

DM tip: The TTRPG equivalent to video games highlighting important objects, is DMs ensuring we describe the interactive objects of a room in such a way players will want to investigate them. Include multiple objects with varying levels of importance to avoid railroading.
