I enjoy being a scientist, but I think I'd rather be a cat with an h-index of 12.

So, when you search for "lazy vegan high-protein snacks" why do you get "make cookies out of chickpeas!" or "weird snack balls from only 9 esoteric ingredients". I want LAZY. I want BAG OF NUTS level effort. Thank you.

Tuition fees are rising again and nobody is happy – it’s time to actually fix our broken university sector | Zoe Williams The figures simply don’t add up for higher education in England and Wales. Yet delusional politicians from all parties seem intent on avoiding the issue, says Guardian columnist Zoe Williams

If so many students never repay their loans, maybe the cost of free/low tuition HE isn't as out of reach as it sounds?

Great advice, which I think applies to a lot of academics. It can take a *lot* for a student to approach a scholar they've been reading for years, so be kind.

In light of the Epstein discourse, I want to remind everyone that the person most likely to sexually abuse a child is a man in that child’s family.

Did you see the image? It's pretty hilarious. I can *kind of* understand using AI to lay out a figure (scientists aren't all great artists) but it's shocking that the authors didn't check it for accuracy AND peer reviewers/editors didn't catch it either.

I'm writing this book pitch about urban wildlife & how to appreciate it. I'm suggesting that people explore their neighborhoods to identify animal hotspots & make a map. As an example, I made one for my neighborhood. It's a simple, real sketchy, not meant to be final, but I'm showing you anyway.

Scholars sneaking phrases into papers to fool AI reviewers : Using prompt injections to play a Jedi mind trick on LLMs

Hidden prompts in articles to fool #AI reviewers! It'sbrilliant, it's resistance and it's self-defense! It shows the massively wealthy publishing companies that cutting corners is bad for #science! They could use their wealth to pay independent reviewers.... πŸ§ͺ

#academicsky #booksky Book recommendations needed!

I run a "biology book club" with my undergrads, and as I build next year's reading list I want to include plenty of authors from underrepresented communities. Looking for accessible pop science within the broad field of biology. Any favourites?
