Birds, books, art, politics. Iโ€™m a librarian. Want book recs? I mainly read horror, some sci-fi, and a smattering of non-fiction. Ex-Expat, wishing Iโ€™d never come back to the US, but here and fighting back as best I can. ๆ ƒๆœจ็œŒใซๅฟƒใŒๆฎ‹ใ•ใ‚ŒใŸใ€‚

Last night I dreamed that I was in charge of landscaping Stephen Kingโ€™s grave. He wasnโ€™t dead or anything in my dream either. I was busy trying to attract Annaโ€™s Hummingbirds to his headstone with flowersโ€ฆ

Iโ€™ve been buying them for about ten years now. I really like to look back on my old ones and see how much things have changed. But now with tariffsโ€ฆ. Iโ€™m not so sure.

I just started reading The Fort Bragg Cartel by Seth Harp, and, man, is it brutal. I am continuously shocked by what the upper echelons in our military and government get away with. I also am shocked that anyone who does these things could ever live with themselves after.

A photo of a Brown Thrasher being held by me in banderโ€™s grip. The bird has a brown-rufous back and wings, a cream colored belly with brown stripes or dots down it and a bright yellow eye. The bright yellow eye tells us that this is an after-hatch-year bird. In the back ground a table with bird banding tools are visible.

Brown Thrashers are such cool birds. They were โ€œtskโ€ing all around us as we took measurements of this one.

All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Surveyโ€™s BBL.

What got you into horror novels?

For me, I think one of the biggest pushes was my 5th grade teacher reading us a story out of David Lubar's "In the Land of the Lawn Weenies" after lunch each day

A stylized acrylic painting of a White-Eyed Vireo against a bright blue background. The bird has a yellow to grey head, a white throat, a yellow belly and an olive to grey colored back. It has white-ish wing bars and the primaries have yellow-green edges. The birdโ€™s beak is grey and its eyes are white with a tint of blue. The tail is dark grey with bright yellow-green. The legs are dark grey.

The painting has a black outline and the eye is larger than it would be on an actual bird.

A bookshelf is barely visible behind the painting.

I canโ€™t decide if I should say this is done or if I should add in anything in the background/fix the wing shape a bit more

A Mississippi Kite is perched in a tree. The kite is looking down towards the camera resulting in it looking somewhat perplexed. The bird is mostly grey with darker grey wings and red eyes.

A Muscovy Duck is standing in some grass next to a pond at a neighborhood park. The duck is light grey. A second Muscovy is in the background off to its left. That one is black with a white throat and face.

Iโ€™ve never seen a Muscovy this color before. My daughter desperately wanted to say hello to it

A hummingbird, possibly a juvenile male ruby-throated hummingbird or an adult female, is flying over a section of Turkโ€™s Cap flowers. The flowers are bright red-orange in this lighting. The bird has a white throat, an emerald green back, and various shades of brown to green mixed in. It has a spot of white just above its eye. The wings are moving too fast for the camera to focus on and are just a blur.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

I put a brush pile in my backyard, and since then Iโ€™ve had a rabbit visit and more wrens are stopping by! The bewickโ€™s wrens seem to be my most frequent visitors to it.

Your legacy is the way you made people feel. Your words and actions and rhetoric.

Itโ€™s how youโ€™ll be remembered. Itโ€™s your lasting impact on others.

We should be helpers in this world, not only because itโ€™s right and good and just, but because it is the legacy we leave for others.

A hummingbird is perched on a branch. This is either a female ruby-throated hummingbird or a juvenile male I believe. The bird is looking towards the right. The background is out of focus but you can see light diffusing through green leaves.

Hummingbirds are migrating right now and the park I frequent is absolutely full of Turkโ€™s Cap, making it a refueling station.
