For me, some of the joys of writing are finding ways to invite others into the act. Here is something simple to try after reading Ridl's poem.

Write a poem that:
1. Describes a scene
2. Invites the reader to become the scene
3. Lets them embody that existence

After Spending the Morning Baking Bread by Jack Ridl | The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor 'After Spending the Morning Baking Bread' by Jack Ridl, and the literary and historical notes for Sunday, November 2, 2014.

I read this poem at the beach yesterday and it has one of my favorite turns of the summer!

"Say yes to wanting to be this cat."

It just cracked something open in me.

It's beautiful how it feels like time stops between "triumphantly" and "you're off".

Two men stand close in a tender, intimate embrace beneath a twilight sky, surrounded by soft firelight and shadows. They lean into each other, foreheads nearly touching, eyes closed in quiet affection. Smoke drifts between them, evoking both warmth and transience. Their connection is palpable—lovers cast in a glow of fleeting magic, echoing the doomed devotion of Romeo and Juliet. In the top right corner, white text reads: "@BrokenSpineArts.bsky.social" and "@AlanParry83.bsky.social." At the bottom right, bold white text says: "Read Repost Reply #PoemsAbout #StarCrossed." The Broken Spine logo, shaped like a fountain pen nib, is in the top left corner.

It’s time: #PoemsAbout #StarCrossed 💔

I really enjoyed the way this poem feels like it is expanding with each stanza.

“<insert sketch of a hot air balloon, me>” is incredible! Reading that line changed my role as reader to something else.

The life of a poet is weeping when Dorianne Laux says, “Nothing is gone forever,” and rising, empowered, when Lil’ Kim spits: “Rather count a million while you eat my pussy / push me to the limit, get my feelings in it / get me open while I’m cumming down your throat.” #poetlife #poetsofbluesky

I was walking someplace new today when I was stunned by how the straight fence and path told the story of the Earth’s curvature in shadow.

There is a poem in this image. Maybe a dozen.

I would love to read yours.

Drafting on a Monday can feel like sowing seeds in the gravel. Still, the ritual matters. Keep showing up.

This year has been transformative for my writing because I started a morning pages* routine.

Every morning (mostly), first thing, I try to fill a two-page spread in my notebook with whatever feels right. I’ve played around with constraints, but the only real rule is: I have to show up to the page.

Barbara Abercrombie wrote:
“We can get so into our own feelings that all we want to deal with are the high points, the arias…”

This morning I wrote an ode to the rest of the story. Here is my poem, dropped letters and all.

This was so much fun to read! I love how the structure of this poem mirrors its subject and is a little chaotic in the best way. Each line feel like a step or a skip in zero gravity.
