On the Cheshire Correctional institute HUNGER STRIKE: Beginning on July 7th, a confirmed eight men incarcerated at Cheshire CI launched a hunger strike to demand an end to unnecessary lockdowns and sexually traumatizing strip searches and to demand adequate food, water, medical care, recreation time, and fair wages. Since then, the DOC has spread misinformation about the strike, placed strikers into segregation, denied them basic medical treatment and medication, and continuously kept the facility in lockdown with the lights off. Despite this violence, the number of strikers rose to 26, and the list of demands has increased and expanded. As of August 3rd, nine men have received tickets as retaliation for speaking to the media during a support rally last week. Their hearing is Wednesday August 6th, until then they need supporters calling and emailing the list on the following page. What can we do? We call on all CT DSA members to support the hunger strikers by calling and emailing the contacts on the list below to demand the end of these torturous and violent conditions and to push for the demands of the strikers to be met.
