the player, which would contain the level designer but i know what you're saying. i have to assume they realized the game was very breezy and thus used the level grid as a medium to just show the player fun sprite art or messages. i remember like half of the levels are like this and they still work
this happened to the binding of isaac but by accident
trying again: bubble bobble is incomprehensible to me in a way that i find to be aspirational. like i think it’d be interesting to also design a game where the level design doesn’t need to matter and can be completed with actual button mashing. this isn’t meant to sound mean it’s like, hypnotic.
