Sadly,that lesson was learned in the eafrly 1990s, when Ukraine was persuaded to relinquish it's Soviet-era nuclear missiles and return them to Russia. This agreement,the Budapest Memorandum, guaranteed Ukraine's security by US, Europe, and... Russia.
