How does this speak to AI hype?
We show that hype is central to AI-in-general’s abstract, economic narratives.
But even the concrete, contextual stories of AI-in-particular often rely on abstract, hyped narratives of AI-in-general.
In short: contextual detail is no antidote to AI hype!
We found that ‘AI’ is constructed in two ways:
→ AI-in-general: abstract, hyped, future-oriented, often tied to economic promises
→ AI-in-particular: concrete, contextual, grounded in local stories
Both constructions shape how we imagine AI futures, and both raise the issue of AI hype.
