A great read (just substitute 24 hour news and cable tv for social feeds) is Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman bookshop.org/p/books/amus... you can see that every technology that has involved a screen has kept us planted in place and engaging with our neighbors and community less.

There are a confluence of forces which have aimed us in this direction, however a constant among them is that ultimately this use of technology simply replaces cable tv for our attention and advertisers & special interests want to make sure they get a slice.

I specify federal political identity because there was a long standing social norm of not discussing such things in public and party ideology usually wasn’t the first thing people cared to know about you. Perhaps unavoidable now given (gestures at everything), but also something that is prevalent.

Don’t get me wrong, big fan of the lockdowns personally. They saved lives. Just also saying that it was a large cultural moment.

I have to wonder if that’s not just algorithmic takeover, but also a cultural artifact of the lockdowns and federal political identity overtaking other aspects of personality for priority in relationship building.

I’m not a fan of Gary V, but a snippet from one of his talks hit my feed and he mentioned how we’ve moved from ‘social’ media to ‘interest’ media. That is, we’re no longer centered on relationships but rather on our feelings about the content in the feeds.

The time spent trying to recover will be the entry point for private markets to lock-in modern serfdom.

She was a rescue from the humane society in middle-of-nowhere PA.

Undoubtedly one of the most clever and hardworking dogs I have ever seen. She learned tricks in the flash and we called her our circus dog.
