Many of us are trying to keep our village going and our vulnerable safe right now in DC. Some of us are trying to keep the lights on, in a way, so the rest of you can protest. Some of this is honestly comes off as entitled. Yes, this is your capital, but before it is your capital, it is a home.

If you don’t live in DC, consider not telling DC area locals how to react to everything going on. If you want to protest, do it at home and don’t make things potentially worse for those of us who have to navigate this every day. This government actively wants a reason to crack down.

I don’t want war. I’m tired of just the proxy bullshit and the disinformation campaign that Iran (like Russia) has used against us. And I can hope this regime is one step closer to falling and allowing the Iranian people to finally have agency again.

Police week is when members of law enforcement agencies come to DC and take advantage of having police cars, sirens, and motorcade privileges to abuse in my neighborhood and essentially act like frat guys without repercussions. I always try to be out because this is prime harassment season.

Okay, usually I plan on being out of town for Police Week, but this year I haven’t planned travel in case of DOGE. Employer coincidentally planned our work trip for Police Week. The universe looks out for you in mysterious ways.

I can’t think of a better reward for the Catholics who supported Trump for his policies for him to become their new pope.

Until the Catholic Church properly addresses the child abuse controversy, apologizes to Jewish people for the hidden children controversy after the Holocaust, and returns our menorah to us, every other candidate for Pope is the same to me. Upholding a sad status quo.

Spent my birthday taking the day off of work and learning how to use the National Archives. Didn’t find what I was looking for, but had a lot of fun digging around all the same.

I am calling my members of Congress and reminding them on social media posts about Passover that if they want to show genuine support to their Jewish constituents, they can push back on federal cuts to synagogue security funding. Synagogues are under attack worldwide and ramp up on our holidays.

I also feel I should say most of my ire is at the Catholic Church itself, not Catholics. A lot of my loved ones are still Catholic, and they have moved on from the harmful church we belonged to in order to be better Catholics. I keep saying my Catholic parents made me the Jew I am today.

There’s absolutely space to be had for those upset at organized religion. It’s just that I want to unpack the specific harm Catholicism did to me, not talk about how we can assume all other belief systems than militant atheism suck. You’re no better than the church you left with that attitude.

I wish more former Catholic support groups were more open to those who moved to another religion and found a healthier way to incorporate it into their lives. Every single one I’ve found so far has been full of “Christian Atheists” who are (understandably) angry at all religions.

Apparently all I had to do to keep the missionaries from repeatedly asking if I want to hear the good news was to emphasize my ex-Catholic history, not my Jewishness.

My husband is really starting to vibe with the genealogy research I am doing with his family. It’s so cute.

My great grandfather helped build the NY Subway in the early 1900s. He later returned to Poland and started a family. His son, my grandfather, would come here permanently. It’s a point of pride for my family.
