The Alluring Anoles of Alto Velo
Although I have not been a prolific poster on AA, I have enjoyed contributing articles about the obscure and rarely seen anoles of the Greater Antilles and Lucayan archipelagos, such as Anolis ernestwilliamsi, Anolis fairchildi (1,2,3), and Anolis scripts (1,2,3,4,5). Here is another post in that series, focused on…

Inter-island hostilities
A clip of a much longer video: Two anoles, the ubiquitous Jamaican (Graham’s, Anolis grahami), which adorns every wall in Bermuda, and the seldom seen Barbados (A. extremus), just an occasional shadow in the shade, somehow finding themselves on the desirable territory of my bedroom window. They never came to blows, but the latter was definitely the winner, the Jamaican eventually retreating with his tail between his legs (metaphorically) after 8 minutes of posturing. For more on the introduced anoles of Bermuda, see previous AA posts (here and here).

New Introduced Population of Anolis carolinensis (Green Anole) in Norfolk, Virginia
Growing up in Florida, I was used to seeing Green Anoles, so when I moved to Virginia to start my PhD at Old Dominion University, I wasn’t surprised to see Green Anoles venturing around Norfolk. If anything, seeing the familiar anoles for the first time in the Summer of 2021 gave me a warm feeling of home. However, several months later, I began to realize that I was only seeing these anoles in one specific location.

Spider Snags Adult Anolis osa
Turns out that for anoles, predation by spiders is a very real threat. What a horrible way to go! We've reported on this phenomenon many times in the past. Here's another example.

Green Anole Perches Near Ground to Take Advantage of a Mosquito Trap
Green anoles usually perch high in the vegetation, especially in the presence of brown anoles. But here one female braved the brown bullies, presumably to prey on mosquitoes lured to the trap.

An accurate representation of #SICB2025. Loved @princetonvaughn.bsky.social’s talk on anole morphological differences in urban vs. rural settings!

A doodle of two lizards, the chameleon is thinking “victor thinks I’m not agile wow” and the anole with its mouth open saying “this is fine this is fine”
Victor Munteanu is studying animals who live in trees and what happens when they fall! This is an obvious risk to animals that live their whole lives in trees.
Cats? Great at falling.
Pandas? God bless them, not so much.
Victor’s focusing on lizards for this project.

@alliemartin.bsky.social Gives an excellent talk on the balance male and female Anolis lizards have to maintain between staying warm, escaping predators, and capturing mating opportunities! #SICB2025

Figured I couldn’t miss out on all the cool science happening on this app so… here I am!
Also, shameless plug for my #SICB2025 talk on Tuesday… Come learn about cool brown anole skin color science at 1:45 in International Salon 4 (and also see some cool ovary data 👀)!
