Not bad by any metrics, but past games in the series managed to do more with less, e.g. the sphere grid and weapons customization in FFX, or the gambits and license board in FFXII.

One more thing that is worth touching upon is the progression systems. Rebirth certainly doesn't lack in such systems. The opposite is the case, they are bloated and overly abundant.

FFVII Rebirth ends up delivering an engaging experience so far (30 hours in, chapter 7) while lacking in what is arguably the main attraction for most - the main story. The absence of any sort of momentum in the narrative up to this point weighs heavy.

Although Rebirth is a bit overly reliant on mini-games, they suitably change up the flow of gameplay. Fort Condor and Queen's Blood in particular rule. The magnificent combat from Remake was improved with some caveats, as they somewhat muddied the boss/encounter design.

This is not supposed to be a thread shitting on Rebirth. Far from it. Rebirth is a fantastic game. Despite some visual flaws, it looks and sounds great. To say the soundtrack is superb would be the understatement of the decade.

You could say that it's trying to be faithful were it not, that Remake explicitly made it a point in its narrative to break with that expectation. They could have rewritten parts of the game to round it out better and raise the stakes from the very beginning.

This stretch in the original game was also devoid of tension, as you just head from town to town for quite some time. Back then it was excusable because it only was a small section. After spending 30 hours with Rebirth, the story just now began to pick up steam.

Now, don't get me wrong, FFVII Rebirth features an immensely tactical and fun combat system and side activities that were meticulously crafted with a lot of love and care. What's missing is the essential element of suspense crucial for story-driven games.

Starting FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth felt exciting. After all that has happened in Remake, I was eager to embark on "The Unknown Journey". While the initial exploration of the open world was enjoyable, my enthusiasm waned as hours passed.

FINAL FANTASY XVI is a brave step into breaking new ground for the main FF series. A mature tone, a dark fantasy world, and fast-paced action combat. The devs confidently executed their vision and created a cinematic showpiece with a gripping narrative that can proudly stand among the greats.

As the centerpiece of the story, he goes on to challenge fate itself in his quest to abolish oppressive societal structures. His inner turmoil, as he strives to overcome past mistakes and use his gift for the common good over individual gain, is masterfully embodied by his actor Ben Starr.
