The alps have warmed extremely - as can be seen here in the data from #Innsbruck. Warm years are dominant since the 90s, cold years disappear. Massive glacier melting is only one consequence.

Weather Obs started very early here, Maria Theresa was still alive.

There Might Not Be a Map for That: Budget Cuts Threaten Geological Surveys

Nice to get to talk to the New York Times @nytimes.com about funding challenges around publicly available precompetitive geoscience data acquisitions and geological mapping right when these data are more vital than ever for national and economic security: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/20/c...

Thanks! There are a lot of different plotting options. I need to make some instructional videos.

Very interesting! Maybe the result of mantle metasomatism? I guess I just wasn't lucky enough!

Where in Norway? I looked for olivine in Almklovdalen, but I didn't find anything like that! This looks to me like the larger more gemmy crystals you get in metasomatized carbonate rocks instead of ultramafics.

First lecture of 2025 prepared! How do minerals grow and rocks form? Seems like a very basic question in geology, given how much of the science is build on the prerequisite of rocks existing in nature, but the answer is complex. #petrology #metamorphism #kinetics #thermodynamics

I agree. I am lucky that Bob let me work on such a cool story with him. He's published a lot on pressure solution in shear zones going back to the 80s. We are also working on some interesting aspects of activity gradients and disequilibrium mineral preservation in these rocks.

In the above image you can see that the muscovite in the kink band contains lower Na and higher Mg compared to the, consistent with selective dissolution and reprecipitation within this high strain zone.

New paper alert! Micas and chlorite show progressive recrystallization in a retrograde shear zone, demonstrating that pressure solution is the dominant deformation mechanism (followed by grain boundary sliding). Check it out here lnkd.in/gCqMxaJB

Why are grant proposals always due at the worst times? In the US they are right after New Years, for the ERC grants they are at the beginning of the teaching term. It's like they want to torture us.

U.S. has warmest winter on record – and no, that's not a good thing From lack of snow to wildfires, a record-warm winter had impacts across the country. Scientists say winters are warming faster than any other season in the U.S.

The lower 48 states just had the warmest winter in 130 years of record-keeping, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Temperatures were more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than average.
