"The science of learning empowers teachers to make better decisions in their classrooms. Decisions grounded in how students actually learn, not in how we might wish they did."

This is a fantastic blog post.

Excellent explanation and rebuttal from @carlhendrick.substack.com of views which are unfortunately still too prevalent in much of the educational establishment.

Wednesday 26th March
In the postwar years the 4-minute mile was seen as pinnacle of middle distance running. The barrier was finally broken by 25-year-old Roger Bannister (pictured bottom - original video with his voice over) at the Oxford University Track in May 1954 where he was a medical student. He’d only started running at University. Bannister’s record only stood for 42 days as it was broken by Australia’s John Landy at a meet in Finland.
More than 1700 runners have run a sub-4-minute mile in the 70 years since. However, on Wednesday last week New Zealander Sam Ruthe (top) became the youngest member of the 4-minute mile club. In a race specifically hosted for him to break the record, his pace-makers (including 2-time Olympian Sam Tanner) helped him to a time of 3:58.35 - Aged just 15 years and 341 days (NZ News video inc footage & interview).
The previous youngest, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen who was 16 years and 250 days when he broke 4-minutes, has since gone on to win gold medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Ruthe hopes to run in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, but he’ll still only be 22 at the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia.
Questions:
How long do you have to break Sam Ruthe’s record, could you do it? Or are you already too old?
What average speed (in mph) do you have to run, to run a 4-minute mile?

On Wednesday's TGT, a recent record breaker and a classic sporting first. 15-year-old Sam Ruthe emulates a feat of 71 years ago, creating his own world record. Discuss with your tutees Sam's achievement and whether they could emulate it, or discuss the history.
