Every Frame Counts: An Assistant Editor’s Reference Book - postPerspective These notes have been refined, structured, reviewed and formed into a book called β€œEvery Frame Counts: An Assistant Editor’s Reference Book.”

Some bonus tips that got trimmed from the book ended up being put to good use in this highlight on Randi Altman's postPerspective:

A screenshot of page 96 wherein I say the name of the book *within* the book, which is how you know it’s a good book.

There are goofy photos of me and Marco (who made the illustrations in the book) flanking the text, which is objectively very very funny.

I finally received my own copies in the mail. Can’t wait to read each one. Check out page 96…

The reviews are in, the author approves.

PS: The page turning is due in part to both the compelling contents of the text as well as the helpful nature of the cross-referencing.

Video Post-Production Workflow Guide | Frame.io The web’s most comprehensive post-production resource, written by pro filmmakers, for pro filmmakers. Always expanding, always free.

Frame.io has a great blog post breaking codecs down, too. Knowing how computers are processing video files helps you to troubleshoot more effectively. #PostChat #PostSky

It also allows you to laugh watching those videos I posted earlier in this thread because you’re like β€œno he’s right tho”

How Codecs Work - Tutorial If you work with video, it's vital to understand how codecs work and how they change your image. In this tutorial, I cover all of the big concepts behind codecs,…

In all seriousness, David Kong’s video from (gasp!) nearly a decade ago is still my go-to recommendation for those wanting to learn about codecs and containers.

Nexis workspaces mounted on a MacOS desktop.

Unfortunately β€œEvery Frame Counts” does *not* cover codecs like 1.2 Yums, Tizz 5D, or Horngut 222… apologies, @alanresnick.bsky.social.

Other codecs and naming conventions are outlined in the Turnovers chapter though. Here’s a screenshot of how I organize my DNxHR SQ media onto Nexis workspaces.

I do it with a combination of imported JPEGs and preset sequences. The sequences have a piece of blank media with a color effect on them, and a SubCap effect that allows me to change the text without creating new media.

More on this around p. 113 (still awaiting final proof pages!)

I hope it's a worthy contribution to the community @dr0id.bsky.social and @coreyfrost.bsky.social have fostered here on social mediaβ€”I don't post much and I'm not great at marketing (I'm an Assistant Editor, after all, not some PR genius).

I talk a lot about @avidmediacomposer.bsky.social but it's a mix of technical and holistic tips, tricks and notes. Not a definitive guide, more so insight into the mind and workflow of a First Assistant Editor in a scripted environment.
