Motonormativity is an unconscious cognitive bias where society views private car ownership and usage as the default, necessary, and normal, often overlooking the negative impacts on public health, safety, and the environment.
#Montreal and #Ottawa both received the same PriceWaterhouseCoopers study outlining how they could revitalize their downtowns post-pandemic.
City of Ottawa this week: we are canceling pedestrianization plans in Byward Market.
City of Montreal: Hold my beer.

Interesting opinion... 🤔
The City's consultant also recommended against bike share as a business, but did not consider all the Canadian successes of a public transportation system. Massively successful public bike share systems in Canada Toronto, Montreal, Québec City also surging ahead.
“A city’s creativity doesn’t depend on cars. That’s the 20th century. We’re in the 21st.”— Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
No matter what happens in the Paris election in 4 days, the world’s cities owe @annehidalgo.bsky.social a huge debt of gratitude.
The boldest, most inspiring mayor I’ve seen.
What is “the E-Bike Effect?”
“Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.”
Fewer car trips.

Both those "bike share" models were very small, geared towards serving tourists and were for profit and so were doomed to fail. Successful bike shares in Canadian cities (there are many!) are largely funded with public dollars and need to cover a large geographic area to build demand.
@bikeottawa.bsky.social has this great graphic on bike racks that manufacturers should take to heart bikeottawa.ca/wp-content/u...

Glad to see this important safety issue being brought up by this councillor.
Having been hit at the corner of Churchill and Carling by a driver turning right on a red (I was heading to give blood), this impacts how residents perceive safety in their City, whether seriously injured or not.

The chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee thinks it’s “wasting people’s time” for me to submit an inquiry to city staff about the pedestrian safety issues that impact Centretown residents.
That’s the job, Tim. See you at committee tomorrow.
Killing two birds with one stone:
Eliminating "Right Turns on Red" would also mean "Revert Reds" would no longer be "needed," making the streets even safer for vulnerable road users. 🚦🚸🚲🚶♀️🧑🦽

It was nice to see the CBC reporter use appropriate language.
"The 81-year-old was hit by a man driving a Ford Edge SUV, police say"
There's going to be US tourists showing up to Ottawa this summer now thinking they can approach Canada Geese cause they aren't "tough" like Bald Eagles.
They are going to find out otherwise 😂
Why wait till spring to pedestrianize streets?
Give the people what they want! #Chinatown #Ottawa
Yes, this could just be news about RTO and impacts on Ottawans.
But also perplexing as this council and mayor has pushed us deeper into this transportation mess by:
👉Expensive road widenings=car congestion
👉Defunding transit
👉Pushing back against 🚲🧑🦽🚶♀️infra
👉No action on 🚲 share system
#Ottawa
Totally, right?! Felt very fortunate to be able to do that☺️
Seeing the massive Rideau Canal Skateway Zamboni on the way home was pretty darn cool!
Skated to a show at the NAC last night 😍⛸️🚲
1️⃣ Bike to Dow's Lake
2️⃣ Skate ~7km to NAC
3️⃣ Check skates at the coat check

💯
A mayor and Council that cared about the success of #BywardMarket could implement meaningful changes tomorrow by pedestranizing the entire area and ensuring that area parking garages are used to store vehicles. 🧑🦽🚶♀️🚲

Follow Paris's lead in installing noise radar to crack down on drivers with illegally modified exhausts. In 2025, Edmonton began studying this very technology.
Remember: Cities aren't loud. Cars are.
