An evening stroll in a muggle park with Draco Malfoy. She wasn’t sure if ‘amenable’ was the correct word for it, but the suggestion inspired enough curiosity for her to agree.

But one thing was certain, no matter what he said to her, never again would she trust him completely.

The moment Hermione got back to her flat, she sent the owl. His response came within the hour.

/Of course. There’s a place called The Regent’s Park in London that I’m sure you’re aware of. We can meet at the gates and have a walk. Perhaps Friday at 5:00, if that is amenable.

“I–I suppose I can hear him out… Though I must owl him with my one condition.”

Ron chuckled. “Of course there’s a condition.”

“He asked me to come to the Manor, but I will not be doing that. I will never go there again.”

The two looked at her gravely, but understanding lit their eyes.

Having never had or even witnessed what a good interaction with Draco Malfoy was like, her brain didn’t know how to comprehend it. What was he like underneath the vitriol that she had once assumed encompassed his entire personality? Was he even a person without it?

Malfoy had never given any indication that he would do anything but degrade her. While she understood that she should see the logic behind the situation—that he surely wouldn’t make amends with others just to then further tear her down—distrust still ate away at her very core.

“He’s already apologized to me and Ron, and I hear he’s apologized to Neville, Katie, and loads of others. Now it’s your turn. So you can stop thinking that his invitation is some sort of sick prank. Just /go/.”

That was in fact what she thought of his owl.

Again, Harry sighed, something he had become quite good at these days. Having two children under the age of three seemed to do that to a person.

“He was a child, and he’s totally different now. Plus this isn’t just a one off, Malfoy is making his rounds.

“Never would I have /ever/ thought I would hear such a thing from you of all people, Ron,” Hermione said. She reared on Harry then. “And you’re a close second to last who I would expect this from! Harry, he was awful to you, he was awful to Ron, and somehow he was even /more/ awful to me!”

just before biting into one of the rolls from the basket the waitress had brought them not one second prior to him reaching for it. Nothing could stand in his way on the path to food, not even Hermione’s incredulity.

Well, sue her for not believing something that entirely upended her worldview. There were three things in which she believed in this world: magic, love, and Malfoy being an arse.

“All we’re saying is to give the bloke a listen, yeah? You might be surprised,” Ron said,

Hermione was aghast at what she was hearing out of both of her best friends mouths.

“You’re telling me that the two of you are under the impression that /Draco Malfoy/ is a /good person/?”

Harry sighed while Ron rolled his eyes dramatically, as though she were being impossible.

If we do enough research 🤣

“Good night, Granger. Do consider, for me, that you may want to /stop considering/.”

In the next moment, he was gone.

He looked at her strangely, then with great amusement she had no idea how to place.

“I did not quote him, I paraphrased.”

Hermione gaped as Draco took a handful of powder and passed the container to her.

Their forward progress stopped, and she realized they were standing at the floo. Draco reached for the floo powder, but she wasn’t done. She hadn’t wrapped her mind around it yet, around /him/.

“Are you— Did you just quote Wittgenstein? Since when are you versed in muggle philosophy?”

“or the bounds of your understanding may just be that: /bounds/.”

For someone who dealt in the theoretical daily, Hermione was not appreciating the way he had, seemingly, said nothing at all.

“Throw out the ladder you’ve already climbed before climbing the next, if you will,” Draco added.

“All I mean is that perhaps once you believe you know something, you have put yourself within a box where other knowledge is not allowed in. I don’t mean forget what you know—as I can only assume you never could—but consider it all nonsense while you attempt to grasp the next,

They exited Hermione’s lab and continued to walk to the floo. Their conversation was almost at its end, and she could not tell if that was a good thing, as her brain desperately needed rest, or whether she wanted to find a way to prolong it.

One detail of what he suggested, however, caught in Hermione’s mind.

“‘Metaphysical’ is a /muggle/ term.”

“Yes, well, I could technically use the word ‘intangible’ but that hardly grasps the scope of the issue here, don’t you think?”

“And how, pray tell, is my issue a metaphysical one?"

It was a principle in both the muggle and magical world, in many of the same words, that something could not be made from nothing. But it was a law she had found she could very likely circumvent, based on her observations and subsequent research. She just hadn’t been able to yield results, /yet/.

“Well, there’s really a metaphysical aspect of your problem, isn’t there? But your research is predominantly rooted in the physical, in what you can see and manipulate.”

Hermione blinked. She wanted to argue that her problem /was/ physical, as that was what she was trying to fabricate, a /product/.

“Oh? And what standpoint should I take up?” she said, probably a bit too condescendingly, but to her credit, she was exhausted and having this conversation off the back of yet another failure.

Hermione sighed, and to her surprise, Draco helped her clean up—probably so he could go home sooner. Or perhaps so he could speak with her about her project, as he wasted little time in doing.

“You know, Granger, perhaps you’re looking at this from the wrong standpoint.”

“Then the thing you should do is go home,” she deflected.

“Oh no, I won’t be going until you do as well. No sense in depriving yourself of sleep when all it will do is negatively affect your work, which I happen to have a vested interest in, from an academic perspective, of course. Come on.”

But she hardly expected /Draco Malfoy/ to accept said, apparently open, invitation whenever he got the opportunity.
“Not at this time, I’ve closed up shop. It is, as I increasingly believe you are unaware of, three in the morning.”
She was not aware of that fact. Yet, she did not confirm so.
