Cigarette butts littered the ground. She heard the distant crash of glass before she’d even stepped inside. Perfect. Ochako walked through those gates with a steady stride, chin lifted. Packs of boys leaned against the walls, some of their hair bleached, some with piercings gleaming, most with laughter sharp and cruel. “Fresh meat,” someone muttered. “Tiny guy, isn’t he?” “Looks like he’ll cry if you breathe on him.” Ochako kept walking.

An evening stroll in a muggle park with Draco Malfoy. She wasn’t sure if ‘amenable’ was the correct word for it, but the suggestion inspired enough curiosity for her to agree.

But one thing was certain, no matter what he said to her, never again would she trust him completely.

The moment Hermione got back to her flat, she sent the owl. His response came within the hour.

“He asked me to come to the Manor, but I will not be doing that. I will never go there again.”

The two looked at her gravely, but understanding lit their eyes.

Having never had or even witnessed what a good interaction with Draco Malfoy was like, her brain didn’t know how to comprehend it. What was he like underneath the vitriol that she had once assumed encompassed his entire personality? Was he even a person without it?

Malfoy had never given any indication that he would do anything but degrade her. While she understood that she should see the logic behind the situation—that he surely wouldn’t make amends with others just to then further tear her down—distrust still ate away at her very core.

“He’s already apologized to me and Ron, and I hear he’s apologized to Neville, Katie, and loads of others. Now it’s your turn. So you can stop thinking that his invitation is some sort of sick prank. Just /go/.”

That was in fact what she thought of his owl.

Again, Harry sighed, something he had become quite good at these days. Having two children under the age of three seemed to do that to a person.

“He was a child, and he’s totally different now. Plus this isn’t just a one off, Malfoy is making his rounds.

“Never would I have /ever/ thought I would hear such a thing from you of all people, Ron,” Hermione said. She reared on Harry then. “And you’re a close second to last who I would expect this from! Harry, he was awful to you, he was awful to Ron, and somehow he was even /more/ awful to me!”

Well, sue her for not believing something that entirely upended her worldview. There were three things in which she believed in this world: magic, love, and Malfoy being an arse.

Hermione was aghast at what she was hearing out of both of her best friends mouths.

Harry sighed while Ron rolled his eyes dramatically, as though she were being impossible.

Hermione gaped as Draco took a handful of powder and passed the container to her.

Their forward progress stopped, and she realized they were standing at the floo. Draco reached for the floo powder, but she wasn’t done. She hadn’t wrapped her mind around it yet, around /him/.

“Are you— Did you just quote Wittgenstein? Since when are you versed in muggle philosophy?”

“or the bounds of your understanding may just be that: /bounds/.”

For someone who dealt in the theoretical daily, Hermione was not appreciating the way he had, seemingly, said nothing at all.

“Throw out the ladder you’ve already climbed before climbing the next, if you will,” Draco added.
