In this time of turmoil I’m falling into one of my favorite hobbies: watching old, long running shows and pointing at the screen when I recognize someone (Criminal Minds, S1.6, Lassiter from Psych).

Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The book explores how Black men transformed a style once imposed upon them into a tool for self-expression, resistance, and dignity. — The Met Gala raises money through ticket sales. Major fashion houses often purchase entire tables and then invite guests to attend wearing their designs. This is money that would otherwise be spent on private marketing—but here, it goes toward a public cultural institution. — Not all clothing is meant to be practical or "presentable" by conventional standards. Some garments are made as artistic statements. Even if you wouldn’t wear something to the office, you can still appreciate the creativity and technical mastery behind it. — Events like this provide work for countless tailors, embroiderers, textile specialists, and artisans—many of whom produce garments entirely by hand. So, I know that the Met Gala gives big Hunger Games energy. That analogy is warranted given everything going on in the world.
However, I’d like to take a moment to gently remind people that the event really does support artisans, public history, and preservation. It’s not just about celebs.

I hope tonight’s #MetGala theme encourages people to read up on dandyism and other ways Black people have used fashion to assert personhood, creativity, & liberation in the face of the extreme hate. Research tignon laws, sapeurs, all of it. There’s a lot to learn.

The Devil works hard but whoever does marketing for KU books works harder.
