I always knew that Linux would eventually become a great desktop OS after seeing the continuous improvements over the years.
What I could have never predicted is Microsoft becoming hellbent on self destruction with AI and forced cloud BS!!
Linux is better solely because Windows got so much worse!

I used to copy my homework to the old PC under my desk that I ran as a home server. I would then go to school, type my IP address into a browser, download and print it out.
There were so many things that could have gone wrong with this whole process, but somehow it did not fail me even once!

I’ve come back to Ubuntu after a long time, why the hell does ‘apt install cmake’ install the snap package behind my back, and not the apt package like I asked? At the very least ask me!!
If someone’s using the command line then trust that they’re tech literate enough to make the right decision.

That NES emulator test video by 100thCoin motivated me to work on my own emulator some more. Implementing CPU opcodes is a real slog but I’m making progress.

I’m pretty sure that Liquid Glass is the start of porting Vision Pro features to the Mac and iPhone/iPad, just like OSX Lion added iOS features. How long until eye tracking & an always on camera becomes the norm? Would you be okay with that??

An application with 3 sub windows. "ROM Info" contains the filename of the NES ROM file and the header data. "CPU" displays the internal state of the emulated 6502 CPU, along with buttons to take one step in the execution, or to reset the system. The last window, "Memory", shows the hex output of 256 bytes of memory starting at address 0x8000.

My emulator now shows a graphical view of the internals of the CPU and memory.
It's really cool being able to watch the test programs running this way!

I’d argue that early 8 bit games are already viewed this way! IMO very few of them hold up today, and aren’t interesting for more than 5 mins of gameplay.

Although a more apt analogy would be silent movies vs talkies..

It’d suck if they got rid of finger tracking, these leaked designs are missing the palm strap from the Index controllers so you’ll just drop the thing if you open your grip…

Sleep graph from the Apple Health app. Shows normal sleep phases until 6am where it shows just a vague blue blob for an hour, where I was allegedly sleeping but really doomscrolling.

My phone telling me I was “asleep” when I was doomscrolling literally on the same device that blared my wake up alarm 🤦🏽‍♂️

And yes, I like to sync the whole repo, so I can pick up *exactly* where I left off on another device without having to commit, push to remote from my desktop, then pull on my laptop.

I lost the last couple of commits to my local git repo because my cloud sync server had a conflict!

That’s never happened before!!

Luckily I didn’t lose any real work, it reverted to having the changes uncommitted..

I introduced some friends to HL1 in 2013 and even back then I told them that watching a video of the first 10 minutes was all they needed… Black Mesa is a huge improvement but fundamentally still based on outdated game design

For anyone remotely interested in the process of game development, the 20th anniversary update has commentary by the developers which are absolute gems. They’re really gonna make me play through the game yet another time 😆

I got Half-Life 1 in 2003, and it 100% lived up to all the hype. I adored its map editor, whereas other engines were impenetrable to 16 yo me. After HL2 released I spent many evenings modding the Source engine. It was such a huge influence on me as a game dev. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years!

Some drunk girls approached me at a burger place in Soho insisting that they’ve seen me on TV before and wouldn’t let it go. I said I did some interviews years ago for my game No Man’s Sky. They’d heard of it, asked me a few questions and then paid for my meal! The guilt has been eating me up since.

This is the box art for the game Banjo-Kazooie. The eponymous duo are running towards the viewer. Under Banjo’s left arm is a purple jinjo who seems done with life, and his right arm is reaching out for a golden jiggy that’s almost within his grasp. Kazooie is sticking out of Banjo’s backpack with her wings spread out (bonus points for a playable female character??). The antagonist of the game, Gruntilda the witch, can be seen in the background and appears to be chasing the duo in gargantuan form (which never happens in the game). Her left hand is creeping towards the viewer and is moments away from clutching our heroes. Various characters are dotted around the cliffs and behind the brim of Grunty’s hat, but just play the game already.

Banjo-Kazooie was considered very progressive for its time because instead of rescuing a princess or another love interest, you actually rescue your sister

A fast food pizza place boasting about their “exclusive 0% discount for NHS staff and key workers”. The sign probably said “10%” in the past but the “1” has been scruffily covered up with white paper and sticky tape in the shape of a “1”. This was most likely done due to difficult economic circumstances.

Forget banging pots and pans, if you’re gonna spit in the faces of NHS workers do it properly! It’s wonderful to be appreciated so much 🥰
