The coda on this story is that a few years ago leading up to a big birthday for my dad I reached out to the Goodall foundation and tried to find another Stanley to send to my dad. He’s been out of model for a long time. They sent me some links to gorilla toys that look nothing like him.

A guy called him creepy once and I decided then and there I was never talking to him again.

He gave my dad this stuffed chimpanzee toy, my dad brought it home and Stanley has never been out of reach for me since.

33-34ish years ago, if family lore is to be believed, my dad came home from his last day interning or TAing for a Dr. Stanley. My dad is now a behavioral psychiatrist and I guess this doctor did a lot of research with the Goodall foundation.
